I'm impressed with your ric knowledge - thanks for the input. So I should be ok with one of these?

Not much knowledge, I'm afraid. I'd just replaced them in my 4001 and 360 :)

Unfortunately, the pic you're showing won't do it alone.

And apologies, I erred in my original post; RIC use an ordinary stereo jack, and change the mono jack to one of these:

Which you can get here: Link Removed

The two left lugs are Tip and Sleeve. The two right lugs are a simple SPST switch activated by inserting a plug, which hits the plastic nub, closing the switch. This switch shorts Ring to Tip on the stereo jack, which then jumper signal to Tip on the mono jack.

With only one jack, you'll need a switch. I think you'd be best off putting a push-pull pot on one of the controls, and using that to switch mono/stereo operation. No passive switching stereo jacks I know of can differentiate between mono and stereo plugs, as they just make or break contacts based on the diameter of the inserted plug, which, of course, is the same stereo or mono.

Ah yes i see what you mean. If I put a mono jack into a stereo socket the pickup wired to the tip2 will go to the ground sleeve - I had imagined it would go to a common tip and not earth. So I'll have to go back to a more basic setup and just wire conventionally to a standard mono socket and forget being able to split the output signal two ways.

I can't say I blame you :) If you want to go with a stereo option down the road it's very easy with a SPDT switch: you wire the 2nd PU to toggle between ring and tip depending on switch position.

Sadly I don't use the stereo output very often, but when I have, especially for recording, it's quite rewarding. A favorite trick is to take the bassier neck PU to one track, compressed, and then bridge PU with crazy effects to another track, even better processed in stereo!

Black black black.!.
Not happy with the test pieces yet - tried some aniline-type dye powder from the labs at work. The black went dark green and the dark blue went burgundy-coloured in Rustins lacquer :(
Got some remnants of dye concentrate in a dulux tinter bottle. It seemed to really dufus the cure of the Rustins - maybe I put too much in...
Wings glued on now, starting to look more like a bass guitar. Lots of sanding to do before the next picture.
