Riffs you absolutely REFUSED to learn, and still learned by accident anyways

Back in jr. high Stage Band, one of the trumpet players asked if I could play "25 or 6 to 4" (Chicago). He was pretty impressed that I could play it 1st try, without looking. To this day, I've never learned that song!

Smoke on the water, I was screwing around with chords for intonation sakes when I got the fretless...and out came smoke on the water! Even worse though, is when you are messing around, just noodling and you stumble on a great riff, and you play it for your friends and they say oh...thats "that song!" thats embarrassing.

I'll open this tin of beans with Smoke on the Water. Just when I was starting up, I was sort of messing around near open E, and that happened :scowl:

now are we talking about aping the chords (G, Bb, C, etc.) or playing the actual bass line? because the bass line rocks!

i was playing at this church that i used to play for (I'm not religious by the way), and we were playing a song in Eb. There was a bass solo that I was supposed to play at the bridge, and I wanted to impress the church-goers with my amazing skittles, but instead of a cool groove, I accidentally played a recognizable riff.... I didn't even know how to play it prior to that day... It was "Beat it" by Michael Jackson.

+1 on that.

The bass line to Smoke on the Water is a testament to what a bassist can do with the Minor Pentatonic scale and a lot of really kind bud.

It's quite complex, I don't think Glover used the same lick twice during the entire song, and is made of 110% pure and unadulterated groove.
