ring modulators!

I ran mine upstream of my envelope filter, modulation, and delay, but downstream of octave, fuzz, and OD. I was using it to crush bits, though, and wanted the option to feed that into my filter. I could see a case for basically anywhere on the board.

I got the Dr. Scientist Phreak RM pedal - I don't have any other RM pedals to compare this to, but I've used them in the past. This one has a ton of options - either tune the oscillators manually, or hold down the left pedal and it will tune it to that, have a LFO (many diff shapes), or you can have it track your playing and set the frequency automatically which to me sounded the best. there are some hidden DSP effects (reverbs, bit crusher & aliasing) you can turn on which aren't tweakable but sound decent enough. as always with RM the sound can get crazy sometimes.. I haven't played it with my band yet but afaict there isn't any bass/low end suck (unless its part of the ring modulation, the pedal itself doesn't seem to have a 100hz high pass filter like many guitar pedals). If you want a Ring Modulator pedal you may want to ask yourself - "Do I really need a Ring Modulator Pedal?" Your answer should be "No, I really don't", but if you insist on saying "Sure why not" then this pedal would be a great buy.

After playing with the Phreak in my pedal board for a few weeks now I want to take back the snarky comments in my previous post - it is a really usable pedal (with judicious use of the mix knob) that can add some nice ethereal spookiness depth to your sound that is outside of the standard chorus or flanger. It can def get crazy if wanted - i like the secret DSP bit crusher/reverb setting - but it doesn't have to be - & it works well with other modulation pedals.

I spent about 10 minutes with the Radius without reading the Quick Start guide or even trying all the different modes, this thing absolutely f***ing smokes the Ring Thing or any other ring mod I’ve tried. Best NPD I’ve had in a while.

I really like the tonal qualities of the effected sound, and it does a really good job of staying around unity gain and not succumbing to volume or frequency spikes. The Mix knob does a nice job of capturing your clean sound even at mostly wet settings, it makes me think the designers had bassists in mind.

I still have to learn how to properly use the thing but right off the bat I found and saved two presets that I’m floored with; it’s easy to get an almost vocal quality to the ring mod tones, as well as having it blur the lines between ring mod and trem/phaser/flanger. Trying it with an expression pedal is also next on the list.

Thanks for the report!!..Man I'm really jealous too lol..
Have you gone into the web editor yet?..I know you can set up the Aux switch in a few ways..
Also do you run in stereo?..I have a stereo ambient rig and am curious can you get stereo widening sound from it or is it just a parallel stereo signal that sounds like mono.. Anyways enjoy it

I haven’t tried the editor yet but I do intend to set the Aux switch to cycle through presets. And so far I’ve only tried it through headphones, not sure if that counts haha. I normally run mono though.
I’ve had the Moogerfooger ring mod in years past and while the Ring Thing has been my favorite since it came out, there were always a few things I missed about the Moog. The Radius does it all and more, and sounds better doing it. I hope you get a chance to own one of these
