RIP Alvin Lee

Man! This one hurts. A.Lee is probably my very favorite song writer and guitarist and TNY ranks in the top league of my favorite bands for sure.
I've only seen A.Lee in concert once; it was a large bar in G.R. MI (sometime in the early '80s) and I was lucky enough to be so close as to be leaning on the stage. Awesome to view that closely (I could see then).

I actually wept a little when I heard about this earlier today. I remember seeing Woodstock (the film) for the first time, and just sitting there slack-jawed in awe of his playing on I'm Going Home. On of the first records I bought was Ssssh! Love that album. Watt is another favorites. Man, this is a really sad day.
I have a ticket stub with Ten Years After, ZZ Top, and Wild Turkey in 1972 (or was it 1973?). Anyway, a rockin' show!!

They did two nights & I was at the second one - place was rammed out. Saw them twice after that; Once at Reading Rock (same year that SRV played IIRC) & then at Hammersmith Odeon on the 'About Time' tour. Both were great gigs, but there was magic in the air at The Marquee. The first night got put out on DVD a few years back - well worth grabbing it, they were cookin'.

Joe Cocker, Santana and Ten Years After. Whenever the Woodstock movie is on I'm riveted to these 3 performances.
Me too. Great interaction between the guitar and bass. And the organ is pretty snazzy too.
I'm sad.
Damn fine player. Didn't see, but heard him at Woodstock. Saw TYA 3 or 4 times, and they never failed to impress.
Saw Ten Years After once back in the day, just amazing. One of the first bass lines I learned was Love Like A Man. Alvin Lee, gone too soon.

i have been thinking about this since i heard the news...sad day indeed...anyway
i thought i would take this opportunity to express my thoughts...and my gratitude to Britain for providing us so many blistering guitarists over the years
ok...here ARE my thoughts...the 3 greatest guitarists (pop, obviously...bluegrass etc is a different animal):
ALVIN LEE-- as i said, just a pure, blistering animal...the king of rock guitar...Clapton is good (and british), but he's no Alvin
JOHN MCLAUGHLIN (SIC?)-- as far as jazz goes, i think he is King...sure DiMeola and Metheny are great, but John McLaughlin is the king
ROBERT FRIPP-- in his King Crimson incarnation, he is probably the finest guitarist ever that few people today have ever heard of (along with Roy Buchanan...but i digress)...i think Fripp is simply masterful, and he completes my trio of this post.
i know this thread is meant as a tribute to alvin lee, so i won't post again, but i just felt like sharing my opinion...

I agree...add Santana & Sly, too.
But no doubt Havens (could there have been a better opening act? No.) & TYA/Lee (intense, raw emotion/energy).
