Sad news. I'm a regular Smiths listener as in every week of my life regular. Andy had great chops that complimented Marr so well. Getting old sucks.

Quite literally that, given how the money was divided up, relative to his impact on the recordings.
One of the all-time greats and a huge influence on me as a player and a writer. Devastating.
One of the greatest bass players ever. He really made a lot (if not most) of those songs. I didn't know he was so ill.
RIP. What a great player, and writer! Those bass lines he composed are as integral to the songs as the guitar and the vocals. And always a killer sound. Very sad, too young to go.

My god... one of my first influences on the bass. Never forgot the bass line of Bigmouth Strikes Again and This Charming Man. Rest In Peace mate!
A brilliant and inspiring player. Being claimed at 59 is far too young. I expected the guys in The Smiths to be much older.
I spent ages trying to play "This Charming Man" as a beginner player, having no idea it was far above my head at the time. Once I got a handle on it, many other songs seemed much easier in comparison.

THE best alternative rocks style bassist of all time. The influence his sound has on me every single day can't be measured. To this day I wake up most days to a Smiths bassline blasting from my stereo.
Andy Rourke, his bass playing just blows my mind - criminally underrated contributor to the craft. I think Andy Rourke, John Deacon and Colin Greenwood should be studied in every music program that exists, all terribly undervalued.
Somehow this got past me…Freebass, the Manchester all-bass allstars, Rourke, Hooky, and Mani…
It really does break my heart. One thing I noticed when I came over to bass from guitar a few years ago and did a deep dive, is that isolated bass tracks are usually a big mess that sounds good in a mix. Except for Andy Rourke. His lines were together and his playing was tight and clear AND he sounded fantastic in a mix.
I can't wait to do some listening, because my work speakers have no low end at all.

One of my recent influences. If the anti-pick crowd still exists, I would direct them to Andy's playing and how present and driving it was on the Smiths songs. One of the greats!

He must have been 19 or 20. He's only 4 years older than me, and I was listening to the Smiths in high school!
I you play bass,you knew the first time you heard a Smiths song the bass was killer. Life is so short.
The sole reason I started playing with a pick, and one of my number one inspirations. Rest in Peace.
I'll be honest, I've never listened to The Smiths. I may have heard a song or 2 over the years and never knew who it was. I'll have to check them out. RIP to an otherwise well known bass player. The world is lesser for his passing.
