Double Bass RIP Chick

I became obsessed with Chick in my late teens via the Return to Forever catalog, and have remained a big fan all along. Had the opportunity to see his and one of his Spanish bands play with two flamenco dancers on stage. Also got a chance to see Chick play a duo concert with Bela Fleck.

My favorite thing about Chick was his amazing improvisational ability. While at the same time he had the ability to play highly complex written music, and his compositions were pretty amazing. It's really hard to say any other jazz musician has had a greater impact than Chick, IMO.

I saw him multiple times. The first one was with the acoustic band back in the late 80's/early 90's. The airport lost JP's bass and he had to play his electric. It didn't matter. I ended up sitting in a Denny's at 3 AM after the show with a friend and both of our minds were blown. Saw him later with Bela Fleck, and then later at my own U doing a masterclass where he played both piano and drums. On top of this, Three Quartets is one of my favorite albums of all time.

RIP, Mr Corea. You have left your mark.

He was one of the 'gateway' guys for me.

I discovered Romantic Warrior, then Friends, in high school. (Eddie Gomez on Friends led to me listening to Bill Evans) A couple of years later it was Three Quartets. Then I was all up into Now He Sings, Now He Sobs and the Circle band.

He was one of those improvisers who seemed totally unencumbered by an instrument...always with free access and dialed into IT. Going back and listening to very early recordings he was on, he also had his stuff right from the beginning. ...a true sign of genius.

RIP

So sad to hear this when waking up this morning! I was fortunate to be able to hear him playing 18 months ago in the Roman Theater in Vienne. So fresh, so generous!

Simply, my musical hero. It's impossible to overstate how much I have shamelessly stolen from Mr. Corea since Light as a Feather burst from my Close & Play in the mid-70s. Each time I saw him play was unique and supremely inspiring.

There are too many pieces to pick one, but I'm sending out this because it's so joyous and it's just Chick & Steve.

Rest in power, maestro!

When the Trio Music record came out, me and my best friend practically inhaled it, particularly the Monk half, and we were lucky enough to see them when they came to Rochester on the following tour. I was pretty new to jazz at that point but you didn’t have to know much to know how great they were, particularly the way Chick and Haynes played together

My favorite memory of seeing Chick was when he played the Blue Note with Origin. As great as his solos were the most amazing thing was his comping for the horn solos. No matter how great they sounded (Steve Davis, Steve Wilson et al, they were pretty great) I would always be drawn to Chick and his uncanny ability to always respond with the right sound to help get these guy to where they wanted to go. This was done with no pushing, no leading and it was not done in an attempt to draw attention to himself. There was no ego involved, it’s just his ear and mind were so fast, and his instincts so spot on, it was just impossible not to listen to him

Everyone has said such heartfelt and beautiful things about this Master musician. Been a fan forever. Saw Return to Forever, wore out two "Light As A Feather" records. Witnessed Herbie and Chick play as a duo together in New York. It was unbelievable. Last saw him with Gary Burton about 8 years ago. They were doing a duo tour and for some reason started the tour in Kauai. I think they were going to Japan. Watching and hearing them at the small community college concert hall on Kauai was transformative. We were transported to another dimension; listening to something akin to musical genius. Chick Corea was an astonishingly brilliant musician and a source of inspiration. It's really hard when a musical hero passes. Can't really wrap my head around it. It's like a family member has passed.

Very sorry to hear this. In the early 1970s for three years, I was a production assistant and road manager for the Jonny Mann Singers TV show. We would go into the recording studio to record tracks each week, which included a number of The Wrecking Crew. Every-so-often Chick would sit in for Paul Smith. It was great in between recordings when they would jamb. An amazing experience for me at 21 to 23 years old.

I had no idea Chick had so many great albums - thank you to everyone for mentioning ya’ll’s favorites in the thread. I’ve downloaded them all on my Apple Music and I’ve been on a “Chick Kick” ever since. So much great music...and Miroslav Vitous on Chick’s debut —fantastic! Why haven’t I listened to any of this stuff before? I only had My Spanish Heart and the first Trilogy album; he had such an incredible output! R.I.P. Chick
