RIP Dusty Hill

That's sad news.

I remember being in middle-school in the late 70s and my friend and I singing "Pearl Necklace" at his parents dinner table during dinner. We just thought it was a cool song about jewelry. We could not understand why his parents stopped talking and gave us the strangest looks. "Tube Snake Boogie" was another jaw-dropper. :roflmao:

Later, in high-school I gave a girl I liked my prized possession - my ZZ Top keychain.

Nowadays, my band does a pretty smokin' "Fool For You Stockings."

I always liked Dusty's playing; he played for the music, not his ego.

Only saw them once. It was after they took a 3 year break and came back with the Deguello album. Nothing fancy at all about them except the beards Billy and Dusty grew during the vacation. Billy only played a couple guitars, mostly Pearly, and Dusty had this red Schecter with binding based on his old basses. I kid you not...even without the big production values they became known for at shows, it was in my top 3 of best shows ever. There were a couple of songs they did where they played sax and showed a movie of them playing saxes and doing choreography, but otherwise it was them, amps, lights and a flown PA (rare in those days) that sounded awesome in a place known for sounding like crap. The three of them ARE the show.

Guess it's "were" now, though. Dusty was a huge favorite of mine and a big influence. And people forget how amazing his voice was. Billy should have let him sing everything.

They just played a show Friday night, 7/23/21, at the New Lenox, Il town center for about 400 people.
Dusty had to return to TX for hip surgery, so "Elwood Francis", the Reverend Willie G's longtime guitar tech sat in. There's a bunch of video of it on Youtube.
Don't know why such a small show, but they kicked it anyways! Hit the linked video and you'll find a ton more.

Dusty, RIP brother, you were a class act all the way, and left very large footprints.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Hill.

I will add that his signature Fender Bass is one of the liveliest and most musical instruments I've had the pleasure of playing. RIP to a player who epitomized the bassist's role.

Shocking news. I saw them at the Forum in L.A. back when they wore cowboy hats and were beardless. It was right after their Tejas album was released when "Driving While Blind" was big. Yeah, I'm old.
