He and his older brother, Ben, were from Kansas City, Kansas; I'm from the Missouri side, but was a loyal customer at Ben's record store, Caper's Corners. Crazy place, not exactly like the one in High Fidelity as its heyday was before that kind of store, but Ben was quite a character himself, similar to Rodney Dangerfield, and would never let anyone forget who his brother was. One of the few places to get import albums way back when; I met the Ramones there, and assisted with a Robert Fripp solo performance. A one of a kind joint, a culture sadly disappearing.
R.I.P. to a great actor and man who was not shy about saying what he believed in either.
As a 70s tv child, he was part of my life. MTM, Lou Grant, Lord knows how many other shows...the perfect crusty old guy in charge.
I just saw him on a new episode of Frank and Gracie. He didn't look too good. It sounds like he lived a good life. RIP Ed Asner.
Coincidentally the missus and I decided to watch the 1970's mini-series Roots last night (my wife had never seen it!). I'd forgotten that Ed Asner was in the first episode, as the morally-conflicted slave ship captain. Good performance; he went all-in.
