RIP Helen Reddy

When I was 13 years old I wanted to get my (female) bandmate an album for her birthday, so my mom drove me to the local record store and I picked out a copy of Carly Simon's No Secrets.

My mom wouldn't let me buy that album because you could see Carly's nipples through her blue shirt on the album cover! So I wound up buying my bandmate Helen Reddy's I Am Woman instead.

I like to think that may have been the right choice in some small way. RIP Ms. Reddy.

I like Helen also but she had the strangest history. She released 'I am Woman' in 1971 and it was a huge hit, it became an anthem for women. But then she followed that up with 'Delta Dawn', 'Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)', and then 'Angie Baby'. All three were smash hits and all three had a crazy woman as the star of her songs.

Are you suggesting that her later songs somehow negate the message of "I am woman"?

Ok, I'll give you Delta Dawn, and Leave Me Alone, but Angie Baby still demonstrated girl power.

Whether she killed him figuratively or literally, Angie ultimately had power over the man. ;)

Awww man, RIP. Her greatest hits album was one of a couple dozen in the record section of our console stereo when I was a kid. My mom played it pretty regularly (she doesn't have any vinyl now). I Am Woman may sound cheesy now, but it was a fairly bold song to put out back then.

I remember that album. I remember that blue shirt. I was 13 once.....
