RIP Jeff Hanneman

I remember being 13 years old. The year: 1986. I thought Iron Maiden was as heavy as it got. Then a friend played me Metallica's "Master Of Puppets". I didn't think ANYTHING could be heavier than that. Then a few months later the same friend played me "Reign In Blood"

I didn't know quite what to make of it at first. It just seemed like such a blur, but it was so damn HEAVY. The guitar solos were CRAZY. Seemed like more whammy bar than anything. It was confusing, but it was compelling. I made a copy from him, and soon, I was hooked. Slayer became my FAVORITE band.

And even today, with all the downtuning and 8-string guitars and hyphenated subgenres and whatever, there is still NOTHING that can out-heavy Slayer.

R.I.P Jeff. Your music was an important part of my younger years. And though the music establishment may still be too conservative to acknowledge it, one day metal will be understood as one of the most important musical styles of the current era, and Slayer will be considered one of its most important and influential godfathers.

devastating, the music community lost a great brother today. he will be mourned and missed dearly.

For my personal Slayer story - ive seen Slayer 5 times in the last 7 years or so. maybe not there "prime" days, but i never left without a huge smile on my face. it was great, every time. Slayer has been a huge influence on my musical style, and their music helped me through alot of dark times.

and just for Jeff...

F@CKING SLAYER!

RIP Mr. Hanneman. I spent a lot of time listening to Slayer and have seen them in concert more than any other band. You were a very talented member of the metal community and you will be missed by many.

Posts are saying he suffered from a nasty spider bite that almost had his arm cut off in 2011 and started his health issues..weird.

This is true.

Liver failure was from complications of the spider bite, AKAIF.
