Some thoughts on the new bass....it does what I had hoped and more. It sounds huge....big, wide, and yet articulate. Turns out the bridge is indeed all wood except for the hipshot saddles. The bass has a beautiful natural midrange. The Reed James Neo pickups are outstanding. Highly recommended. The eq, including the passive tone, is perfect on the Glockenklang pre. I boost the bass and mid eq and it just sounds like the bass passive, but louder and a little more full. It also happens to be one of the most beautiful instruments I've seen.

Glen, yours looks great!! The pictures don't do it any justice at all...and it sounds great acoustically.

Beautiful bass Glen! I'm sure you'll be very happy.

I'm finding that this bass has the same qualities that I loved about my other bass, which I attribute to the 33" scale. The low end is really special with that scale length. This new bass though has an even bigger low end and more sustain. Because (I'm assuming) of the mahogany, the chambering and the wooden bridge it also has the thickest, sweetest sound on the high notes of the bass. It's exactly what I have always wanted out of the higher register of a six string bass. It actually sounds similar to a hollowbody jazz guitar.....very, very nice.

My cherry Ristola is heading to get some wiring fixed soon....after that I'll be putting it up for sale. Hate to see it go, but I don't see myself ever needing two fretted six's. If anyone's interested let me know. It's a really special bass that I've played the heck out of for the last 4 years...and it shows. Plays like a dream and sounds great.

Congrats on your new bass, Glen. It looks wonderful. I searched the thread, I may have missed it, but can you explain the concentric knobs on your new bass? I looks like you went with Delano pickups, what preamp did you have installed?

Sorry to speak for Glen, but I know that his preamp is an ACG filter pre.

Will have pics of my bass as soon as possible.....just found out last night that the new bass will be with me on the national tour of a show called Bring It On this year. It's going to get A LOT of playing time this year, as well as some time in Japan. Looking forward!

Not yet in my hands, my bass left Brian's on Tuesday, just cleared customs and is now sitting in the UPS depot just outside Paris; will be at my home most likely tomorrow.

Andy, is Bring It On the cheerleader musical? It's great that you can live by your music - any chance of you playing in Europe?

GREAT news about your bass!!!!

It is that musical. Something like this wasn't on my radar but someone mentioned it, I auditioned and got it. Should be a fun experience. We won't be going to Europe, but the show will be in Japan in the summer. Very much looking forward to that!

Great news, Andy! I wonder if you'll have a performance in Salt Lake City? I'll certainly try to find a schedule and see if the tour stops through here.

Can't wait to see pictures of your new bass.

Jim Reed made the pickup covers for his pickups.

Brian took the pics before putting on the ramp. He did set it a little low, so it's not super useful as it is. Haven't decided to raise it higher or not. What I really need to do is just work on using a lighter touch. I do miss the ease of adjustment for the ramp as I have on the older bass. That one is set up like a pickup, so you adjust it with screws. It's brilliant. I didn't want to take up that space though under the ramp...preferred to use the space for chambering.

Glen, how's your new bass working out?

My new fretted 5 is just incredible. It's a kissin' cousin to my fretless, in that it's basically the same woods (different top though) and same pickups. Brian has different mahogany blanks; the fretless is a darker, denser, heavier mahogany and the fretted is a lighter colored, less dense mahogany. With the additional chambering, the weight difference is significant, though I haven't weighed the two to get the exact pounds and ounces...

In terms of sound, the Delano's and the ACG preamp give you a huge spectrum of colors, from way growly, to smooth and warm, to a high-freq dominated bass sound (which I don't like). I'm still an apprentice with the ACG, but so far it's giving me the kind of sound I enjoy.

I've got the coil tap switches, which I don't have on the fretless, to switch each pickup between serial, parallel or single. Not much difference between single and parallel, and I find that I mostly use the serial mode.
