Andy,

You're bass looks great! I really like the matching front/back facings.
Is the body a little thicker, given the two facings, or did Brian trim down the Mahogany?

Belated thanks to Andy for the recommendation—that maple-top Ristola is gorgeous (and a steal at that price, same with the myrtle-top on LAG). I was looking for just a few different options, and ended up giving Brian a call a couple of weeks ago. I was really interested in that piece of figured olive he had on his site and wanted to talk with him about a bass with that wood and some changes with electronics. Turns out Brian was already working with that facing for a “builder’s choice” bass he started last year for a project of his own, which was almost finished and would soon be available. So the timing was perfect and the build was almost exactly what I had spec'd out myself. The only difference was a cocobolo fingerboard instead of ebony, but the cocobolo is a great looking piece of wood and has the same sturdiness as ebony, so I was plenty happy to try it. Pics below. Also put in a splitter switch for turning both dual-coils into singles on the outer coils for a sort of J-style setup that sounds really good, even adjusting for the lost output. Can’t say enough good things about Brian’s work. I’m only chagrined that the timing worked out too well and I didn't get to work with him longer!

Still awaiting the phone call to say my bass is finished. I know Brian was still trying to get the preamp from Glockenklang....been trying to get it for over 2 months. Hopefully real soon.

All I keep thinking is, I'm not worthy! But, yes, it's a phenomenal bass.

That's nuts/infuriating about the 2-month preamp wait, even though in the end I'm sure it will be worth it. Can't wait to see some finished pics soon!

I need your advice Ristola Club members. I once owned a Ristola. Sold it. I miss it. I'm considering this one at Luthiers Access Group:

Thing is I'd need to sell me prized Pedulla Thunderbass to do so. I love the Pedulla. Really do. But for some reason this Ristola is speaking to me. I think. I can't play it. I'd have to buy it sight unseen.

Give me your feedback. Talk me in or out.

That bass is one of my favorites of Brian's that I've played. With that said, if you love the Pedulla I don't think it's worth the risk to sell it and buy an unknown bass. They will be very different basses. The Ristola has a 35" scale, Nordstrand pickups and an Audere preamp (that pre sounded good in that bass, but I suspect a different preamp would be even better). Great, great bass, but it'll be very different from what you have now.

I can honestly say that if that bass didn't have that Audere, I'd be interested in it. What a deal. If anyone has the will and or skill to put another pre in there, that will be a stunning instrument

Probably pretty darn good as it is.

I wanted to like the Audere when it came it...tried it a couple of times. I just don't dig it. With that said, that bass that Dan has at LAG still sounds amazing. Again, as you said Ken, I'd still put a different pre in there. I also don't love the Nordstrand dual coils, but again, in that bass they sound great.

Yeah, throw a Nordstrand 3 band in there for sure. Beautiful bass IMO!

Heard from Brian about the bass that Dan has a Luthiers Access Group. He told me the bass is his favorite bass he's heard. He loved it. I myself remember the bass clearly. Also, Brian felt that the Audere pre didn't factor into it. He was always hearing the bass with the preamp flat....and the price on that bass is ridiculous!!
