Road worn, or just a mess?

This reminds me of when new "worn" jeans were the big thing... twice the price for jeans someone else purposely shredded up. Please tell me this trend hasn't made it's way to instruments..

I know they were trying to go for a natural worn look, but they just made it look like a crappy cowhide paint/sand job. And the way they placed the "natural" wear spots make it look like someone put it down, grabbed it by the horns, and rubbed up against it over a long period of time. Gives "well loved" bass a whole new meaning....
Yeah, it happens in politics, too. The same morons you sent to prison come back and try to get re-elected as if nothing ever happened. The only difference is that jeans and basses are trustworthy.

All this chatter and not a single person has commended him for relic'ing the pickguard as well? That's an attention to detail most relic'ers take for granted.

The thing that I find amazing about you Yanks is that you are always right about everything and purport (Pretend for you alliterate Red Necks!) to put the world to rights.
Yet you spend everyday shooting each other!
How intelligent!

And it is a fraudulent Fender as well... classy.
Yeah - that's no way a real Fender - the pickguard is way too small (could be a replacement, but there are other clues), the decal is clearly not original and poorly done (and a 70s decal on a matt, uncoloured headstock), the modern import sticker on the neck plate - 'cause you know, a 40 year old bass with that kind of wear would still have a shiny new neck plate with the sticker wtill attached (also no "F" or ser # on the plater), couldn't be bothered finding metal knobs to "relic".
Finally - the generic term is "reliced" - Road Worn, for better or worse, is a trademark, so just using that term smacks of dishonesty, or at best lack of knowledge).
Oh, yeah - REALLY badly done "Road Wearing" at that, very phony.

This is correct except "Relic" is actually trademarked. Only Fender makes Relic'd basses.

I haven't been following the TB forums much lately, but I *have* been following eBay auctions and I must say there seems to be an up-tick on the number of "Relic"(c) makers, and they all seem to be particularly bad. The OP's example is indeed pretty bad, but I think I've seen worse...

The ones I seem to see most frequently are from some outfit called "East Gloves Customs", who are taking MIM P basses and sanding/burning/checking them but also doing some kind of "gold flake" on the finish. The worst part (besides the bad relic job) is they are calling them e.g. "FENDER STANDARD PRECISION BASS WHITE MARBLE CUSTOM SHOP 59 HEAVY RELIC AGED" in the description.

Here's a prime example of their workmanship. (check out the extreme angle and positioning of the pull-bar/thumbrest!)

I'd say the only thing connected to this that's a '59 relic is maybe the guy operating the sander. Even that seems unlikely, though.

EDIT: Apparently they install '59 CS pickups in them. So maybe that's how they justify calling it "Custom Shop 59". However, I don't think Fender would be amused.
