Roberto-Venn: The Dream Starts...

Great job on your electric repairs. I had the same problem when I was attending the school, only it was with my acoustic. Came to school tired, stupidly decided to work anyway and the buffer snatch the body from my hands and smashed one of the upper bouts to pieces. A teacher who has since left the school (Don) helped me repair everything. After it was done it looked almost as good as your repairs! If you have to have a catastrophe involving your guitar, you want it to be at Roberto Venn. :)

Today was another awesome day! First off, my body is sanded to 150 grit, I believe that when we sand with 220, it will be with the orbital sander. We were given the go ahead for inlay work on out head stock. Yay!!!

I took my piece, dropped some Titebond on it, for security, and traced the outline on my headstock. Once that was done, I used a jeweler's burr, in my Dremel, and milled out the area around the lines. I did have to make the hole a little larger, so that it would fit easier.

I love ebony!!!!

After I test fitted the piece, I needed to drop some ebony dust underneath it, to make sure that it would be flush. Once I had the piece in, it was only a matter of filling any hole with dust, packing them tightly, and wicking super glue in...

Ahhhh...the slapper's thumb returns!!!!!

After drying, for quite a while, I attacked it with 80, then 150, and finally 220 grit.

This was easier than I thought! I do know, though, that this is ebony, which is almost impossible to screw up. Later, I scribed the fingers in with a dental pick, then the corner of a mini-razor knife.

To fill in the scribing, I used India Ink.

I did run into a snag. As I was scribing, the pick went off the MOP, and directly into a hole, from milling. I thought that the dust was solid, but, I guess not. No worries, I refilled the hole, re-glued it, re-sanded it, then, used my ink again.

This time, when I sanded with 1000 grit, I finally got a result that I liked.

I also got my binding glued on to the fretboard, today. You start at the end of the board, near the soundhole. Trim it flush with the sides of the board, then, glue each of the sides on. The result...

In all this work today, I had time to work on a small side project.

My fretting block ( or Fret-O-Tron, as John Reuter likes to call it).

I used Mahogany for the core, then Indian Rosewood for the sides. I measured out the holes, drilled holes for all 24 frets, and holes for 12 acoustic bridge pins. For those who don't know, I would use this block to hold my frets before clamping and gluing them in. When the fret is initially measured and cut, mixing them up would be bad. This way, you can keep track of all your frets, unless you have more than 24. I had a smaller one, but, I wanted one that would look more professional, sitting on my bench. I also used several transfer punches to impress the corresponding numbers and letters (Thanks John!)

I see people creating little jigs and projects everyday, and i finally got inspired enough to do a nice fretting block.

Take for example, Stacey is building an accurate J-45 for his third build. Complete with a dovetail neck joint. R-V doesn't have any jigs for making dovetail neck joints. So, Stacey is building the kit, from OBrien Guitars, dovetail template and routing jig.

Hi Thumpin_P, Just Wanted to congratulate you on this journey...Thanks for keeping us informed of all the progress you have at Roberto Venn...I don[t know why but when I was searching for lutherie schools, RV gas the only one that really caught my attention... But I[m from Costa Rica, so is hard to go to RV....I've benn following this thread from the beginning, and is great to see how your instruments look...Learning to build guitars is a trial of mistakes and discoveries, the good thing is your at the best place and time to make mistakes, beacuse you have the best instructors guiding you to fix them, and that's something that give you great advantage over people who start by their own just trying to do it...
I'm fially learning all of this, I have 2 luthiers helping me out, and is great to see in one year what i have learned....I can do the best setups..Last week slotted my fisrt fingerboard (wenge), did a couple of necks, fretjobs...Is great to actually be working at a shop, know how a business run, have all the experience of not knowing what will come thru the door next time, maybe a broken neck, a paint job, etc...

Okay people...

another productive day, but, as par for the course... i did not get as many pictures as I would have liked.

First... I am done sanding the body... I have finish sanded the body to 220 grit, raised the grain three times... and it is approved!


Next, I got the fingerboard radiused, along with the koa binding.

I started to mark and drill for the side dots. I will get some pics tomorrow...I drilled correctly, but, I had tearout in one of the holes. There was no patching that could be done, so, I took that piece of binding off, and glued a new one on. I will shoot some detailed pics tomorrow, because, I think that I will have time.

I will include another "community shot". This is my other neighbor, Austin, working on his third instrument, a beautiful, flame maple OM cutaway. he is chiseling a little bit, for the binding. Like I have said, a great bunch of people... I am blessed.

Hello folks!

First, let me expound on the finish sanding of the box. After raising the grain, I would use a flat block, for a good, even edge.I don't need to round any edges... not yet.

Once the sanding is done, and everything is checked off by an instructor, then...you begin to round some edges.

You might have to look closely, though. i did not want an extreme roundover. Basically, you would round these edges for two reasons. 1) to aid in the comfort of the instrument. If you are banging chords away for 3 hours a night, you don't want your arm resting on a 90 degree angle...that might hurt.
2) When spraying lacquer, the corners will be difficult to sand. Let me rephrase that, it will be very easy to sand through to the wood on the corners.

I also added a "bullnose" around the soundhole. basically rounding the top edge, and the underside edge, making a more aesthetically pleasing form.

I might go back and touch that up...we'll see.

After those things were done, Josiah told me "Put it away, don't think about it, don't look at it, don't touch it". You get the picture.

So, it was time to move on to the neck...still lots to go!

I re-glued a small portion of the binding. I had to replace the whole piece on the bass side, as there was no real way to fix where the ebony dust had filled in some chip-out.

So, after gluing the replacement on, I noticed some gaps. In the morning, I scraped the excess glue off, then glued the last section together. Then, I scraped everything flush... back to normal!

From here, I used a jig to drill the new holes. last time, I clamped the fretboard down to my workbench, which, I assumed was level, and drilled where I had marked, using my cordless drill, which, also has a level. josh told me that I should have used the jig, so, this time, I used the jig!

Very simple little tool, but, it ensures that you have continuity on each dot. I would still be using ebony dust, to fill the holes, then super glue. After lining up the new hole locations, I drilled. I still had tear-out, but, I used some glue, squeezed it shut, sprayed accelerator, and moved on. Koa is a nasty beast. You really have to have sharp tools, when working with it! After filling the holes with dust, I wicked some glue in. Then when it was dry, I sanded them flush.

Now that this project is done, time for the truss rod!

first, a plug had to be made for the end of the channel.

That was easy enough, (it is at the heel end of the neck) so, I now needed access through the headcap.( and, BTW... Go Vols!!!)

Oh, and just so you know, we will NOT be wrapping the truss rod with electrical tape. I didn't really see how that would work, anyway...

The access... I drew a center line, then measured about 1/8" on either side, measured 1/2" from top to bottom of slot, then using my 1/8" mill bit, routed the initial hole...

Problem is, you need a bigger hole

So, I may work more on this on Monday, to perfect it. i can get a wrench in there, but, it's not "sweet" yet.

Moving on, fretboard inlay!!!

I decided to go classy, going with the diamonds this time. As you can see, I measured diagonally, vertically, and horizontally, to make sure that those puppies were truly centered and aligned well.

The 12th fret was twice as fun!

After everything was good, I spot glued them in, traced around them, and went to town with the Dremel. I also discovered that you can take out too much wood around your inlay. and, you can cut the rout too shallow. It was a lot of extra work, this time.

Jumping ahead of the game, here... After routing the holes, making sure of the alignment, I added enough ebony dust to fill in the gaps, everywhere. From here, it was just drip the super glue...

After glue dries, you will need a radiused sanding block. Our radius is 16. After a few passes, here is one little gem.

It seemed to take forever, and I was really nervous about sanding too much off of my fretboard, but, I was told to "get it level".

Hellllooooo Tber's!

Today, as promised... Gluing on the fretboard!

You start off, attaining a cork-lined clamping caul, for cradling the fretboard. Then, spread your glue, making sure to keep it out of the truss rod cavity. I apologize for not getting photos of this process, but, I was in a hurry to get this process started, so I could get to neck-carving. I did get the clamps...

As you can see, the only particular after this, is to have a caul, to cover the heelcap. you don't want the clamp directly on that...it might break under the strain. As far as the clamps, just be sure to start clamping in a smooth line... Don't start on opposite ends and meet in the middle. You can start from the center and work out, or on one side and work your way to the other. So long as you don't force the glue to a trap, you're okay.

After this was done, I waited for a good, long while. But, that was okay...We had guests...

Nathan and Johnathan Mceuen stopped by... You might know their dad, John Mceuen, from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Awesome performance, wonderful insights, and just two very down to earth, cool individuals! I wish I had more time!

After a longer wait ( because of miscommunication), I finally started the carving process.

First, you band saw the excess from the sides of the neck, and sand out your thickness at the first fret...

You also have to level the area between the sand-outs. Not necessarily leveling it yet, just making it level.

Then you take out the wood between the sand-outs...

tomorrow, I will continue on with carving. Next, I take off the excess from the sides, making it flush with the fretboard, then give it it's profile.

Maybe, I will start doing prep for finish, we'll see!

Tuesday, I continued carving and finishing my neck.

I am loving how this will look! The Rosewood is stunning!

Next, on Wednesday, after the finish sanding on the neck, it was time to prep everything for vinyl sealer. This is used to seal the oils in the wood, helping the lacquer bite into something, plus, giving a mechanical bond for the lacquer.

First,taping everything that needs to be lacquer-free. First, the fretboard and nut...

Next, we use machined aluminum, with threaded stock, to hold onto the neck and body.

Now..., for the bad news...

When I went in for the third coat of sealer... I had the body on the thin metal hook, turned to close the door...and believe me, just turned and "POW". My body fell off of the hook, landing squarely on the concrete floor. Yes, I know... I have the worst luck. I did not take any before pictures, because, this time... I hauled tail to fix it. I knew what to do, and started to piece together the pieces of the back, which had exploded out of my back, because of the instrument being sealed, by a plastic cup. I worked for around 2 hours...the result...

This is after getting it flush, filling it with rosewood dust and super glue. After that, the spray booth was down, so, even though I got the repair knocked out (I just realized the pun there) and was checked off to continue... I couldn't.

If you look hard, you might see where the 3 pieces came out

As far as today, we did a lot of waiting. I carved and shaped a truss rod cover. I took a picture, but, it had no definition. I also started on the repair of the inside. I need to glue in some cleats, along all of the cracks. So, I mad about 8 cleats from rosewood, with the grain opposing the body's grain. Each one is .050", 1' L x 3/8"W. I will glue them in during the repair section of the course. I will try to get more photos tomorrow. I was, finally able to get back into the booth, putting one coat of sealer on, around 5pm. But, tomorrow, I will include more photos.

I'm another one joining this thread late, and all I can say is WOW!!! I just read all 14 pages in one sitting, and it's been a trip.
I've actually been very interested in RV, I fix up my friends instruments and do repairs because I enjoy doing it, and a while back after reading an interview with Mike Lull (He specifically mentions RV, actually) I realized "Hey, I could make a living out of this!!!".
I'm a senior in high school, and plan on applying for fall of 2012. It's so different from what all of my friends are pursuing, but I can't imagine anything more enjoyable. I've already been helping a local tech and actually gotten support from my parents after seeing how much I enjoy this.

I was curious how the job search has gone, and how you're going about that. Feel free to shoot me a pm, i'm interested in what you put together for a resume and such.

I hope things have gotten better for your son as well, sending good vibes both your ways.
 
T.P., man… you know I’ve been watching from the beginning and I too am glad you did this thread. I got 2 kids now, and I’ve dropped a few guitars. I must say, I think your recovery (how you’re handling it all) is amazing. Your repairs look great, and not wanting to come off like a donkey (not actually knowing you and all), I empathize with you. Keep up the good fight and the good work, best wishes to you and yours!
 
Wow, your instruments look really great! :bassist: Congrats on the awesome work, and sorry about the bad luck you've had. I was considering going to RV last year, during my senior year in high school, but I figured I wouldn't have the patience or precision required for the work. It may be time to reconsider, however, as you make it sound like anyone could do it! ;)

Now, to answer questions...
Yvarg, I will ask and find out what that is...I was in traffic court, when they demonstrated everything about that, so, I just "did as the Romans". I grabbed a foam block, and put this little cup in on top of the foam. It does lock in pretty well.

Pocketgroove, I will be the last person to tell you not to go to school here. I am still loving the experience. I have encountered several frame of mind changes, which, I feel, I have benefited from. Your perspective can change quite a bit from day 1 to day....whatever it is. I will add a disclaimer, though. I am a very patient person and I have been enamored with musical instruments since the 90's. Researching them, learning as much as I could, and doing some free thinking about how they work. I say these things because not everyone is wired like me. If you feel like you can do what I am doing, then jump on board! You will be surprised what you can accomplish, when you allow yourself to. Just bring a lot of math, and be prepared to work in a restaurant, while you are here, as they are the only ones hiring. It is a decision that should not be taken lightly, though. I am seeing several people that do not want to give it "their all" and this is a career that will require a great deal of mental and personal fortitude. Good Luck, and,as always,
