Roberto-Venn: The Dream Starts...

Please allow me the opportunity to wish all of my watchers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I am now on my break, so, unless there is something really interesting in my repairs, I will be only answering questions, until January 2. I have one repair, on a classical guitar, plus, I am finishing up on a Squier P-Bass. Plus, I will evaluate my own bass. I cannot intonate it, and, I feel that my nut placement may be off. I know what to do, I just have not had the time. I really need to get these two repairs done. I suppose I will evaluate it today... all that is required is measuring 17" from my nut to the center of my 12th fret.

I simply thought that I would let everybody know that there would be nothing, from school, until January. So, again, Merry Christmas to all and I pray that you all have a safe and happy holiday season.

Rockingbird, I merely appreciate the compliment. I am not doing this for the school, per say, I simply wanted to be as informative as possible for people who might be interested in this career path. I will continue after the break, with the finish of my acoustic and the repair section of the course. I am also going to post a little back story on two repairs, which I have encountered from a neighbor. Thanks again, and I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours.

Hello Faithful Watchers!!!!

I have lots to get you caught up on...yours truly has been busy!

I will first say, though....THERE HAVE BEEN NOOOO MISTAKES!!!!!!!

With that being said, I noticed that I had pictures of some of the finishing process, on the acoustic. When I last posted, I failed to show the scuff and level sanding process. I will give you some shots of before...and I love them!

After the level sanding, it rained. We all had "blushing" in our sprays. Too much moisture in the air. So, the instructors told us to call it a day. I went in today to drop fill some spots, and now...I am ready for wet sanding and buffing. Yesterday, I started sanding to prep for the refinish on the cracks in my bass. I remembered my camera, this time.

As promised, I have some repair shots

First, I rebuilt a Squier P Bass. I did not get all the shots, but, believe me...it plays as good as an American Standard now...

If you have any questions about the extent of the rebuild...PM me. Believe me, the work was extensive.

Next, a classical with three cracks in the top, a broken brace, and several years of abuse. I had scraped the fretboard, to level the string gouges ( How do you get gouges with nylon strings?) polished the frets, and oiled the fretboard, like you wouldn't believe. This had been re-humidified for at least a month, maybe more. After the humidity bath, the cracks were almost closed, plus, the dip on the treble side of the top, near the waist, was almost level. So, Now, the pictures of the actual gluing.

First, the tools used. You can see my handy dandy improvement on the typical work light. This was a purchase from Family Dollar (or Dollar General) for 6.00. A 7 LED headlamp. I discovered that, when you take off the elastic headband, there is an adjustable base, which sits nicely between the braces. Plus, plenty of light!

I also spent a great deal of time making some cleats. Josh (an instructor) gave me a large scrap of cedar. I thickness sanded it to .050". Then, I measured strips that were 3/8" wide, running with the grain. Then, I cut the 1" pieces out of the 3/8" strips, made sure that they were all squared. When I was done, I had 158 good cleats. Josh told me to stock up...I think I did.

I squeezed some Titebond into the cracks, used repair magnets, to hold them in place. Here are some progress shots, including the brace jack the Steven (another instructor) loaned me for the repair.

Needless to say, the repair turned out great. I needed to lower the saddle by 2/32". The action was way too high... even by flamenco standards. Plus, the D tuner was binding quite a bit. I sanded out the tuner shaft cavity and filed the slot in the nut. It was filed at the wrong angle, so, I simply made the string pass through easier. When it is all said and done, the customer will be really happy.

Well, that's all I have for now. I will have more after the 2nd of January. We will continue work on the acoustic, and begin the repair course.

Well, my faithful watchers,

Another fun day in class...with...you guessed it! Sanding!!!!

To start the day, we all inspected our cured acoustic instruments. Then the process of wet sanding began. We all started with 600 grit, using a hard block.

Here, you see the first shot, complete with early morning sun. I started on the lower treble bout, working my way through all four quarters

I eventually got the sides done, at which point, I started on the neck.

From here, I removed the two aluminum rods, and bravely walked out to the buffer. I also received quite a few jokes at my expense about "holding on to the body". It may seem harsh, but, everyone knows that I can take it.

A little relief for you waiting for bad news, I did not drop the body or neck. The gloss came right out of it, and, I was ecstatic with the result!

But, upon further inspection, there were two issues:

1) My repair is not yet complete. I have yet to glue in the cleats, bracing and stabilizing the cracks. Because of this, the wood still moves. I say this because, I noticed a new crack, but, the finish remains intact. It does reflect light, though, so i will do my best, until I can glue in the cleats.

2) Upon further inspection, I still had 600 grit scratches, which meant sanding it to 1000 grit. I had rather hoped that I could get by with 600 grit, as I do not want to sand off too much finish, but, roll on with the punches...

I did not get any more photos,as I was trying to get the sanding done before time to quit. I will update you guys tomorrow. We will be having a guest lecturer for two days, so I will keep you posted about that.

Hellooo faithful watchers!!!

Firstly, blindrabbit, thank you. It really isn't that much work, as I do not cover everything, but, I try to be as comprehensive as possible. The honor is truly all mine, because, the thought of inspiring and helping other people....believe me, that, is the honor.

With that being said, I will segue into a fairly comprehensive subject...repair!

Today, I continued wet sanding to 1000 grit, to eliminate any 600 grit scratches, and I got to thinking about the crack in the back. I asked the lead acoustic instructor, Matt Baker, about gluing in the cleats before doing any more buffing, causing stress on that area.You can identify it by the dark line...lacquer that could not get sanded.

He asked if he could use my repair for a demonstration, for the whole class, and you guys know what I said...of course!

The list of tools were as follows; lacquer-safe tape, razor blade, double stick tape, my repair magnets, and the cleats. As I had discussed earlier, the cleats need to be made from the same wood that you are bracing. In this case, it was rosewood. The cleats are .050" thick, 1" long and 3/8" wide, with the grain running along the 1" measurement. Something that I did not know, was that the edges needed to be chamfered, mostly for appearance. By sanding a nice 45 degree angle on all the upper edges, it gives it a nice, clean look.

Next, you use the masking tape, along with two magnets to lay out where your braces are and where you need to place the cleats. Here, you can see the back brace location, marked with the two straight lines, and the proposed cleat locations marked with the "x"s.

By using the magnets, you can run the magnet into the brace, on either side of it, and mark its location on the tape.

Now that you have the locations, it is time to prep the cleats.
Using double sided tape, you adhere one of the magnets to the cleat. The other side of the cleat will get the glue.

Then, reaching into the body, you will place the cleat as close as you can by hand, and maneuver it into place with the other magnet. Side note...you want the cleat to be as parallel as possible, with the brace...it gives a stronger brace and a cleaner appearance.

Generally, after about 20 minutes, you can take the magnets off, and try to get the double stick tape off of the cleat. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get the tape off.

When it was all said and done, I had installed seven cleats, covering all of my cracks. I will have some glue cleanup to do, but, I am worrying about that later.

For now, I get back to sanding.

Here is the top sanded to 1000 grit, and the last of my sanding pictures...sorry. I will tell more, though.

I got my neck completely sanded, looking good, and I also got my body sanded completely, after lunch.

We did have a guest lecturer. Jon Eaton, a wiz at repair. He is the brother of William Eaton, administrator of the school, and owns a thriving business in Boulder, CO. He went over the outline of the repair section of the course, and covered some basic evaluation and setup skills with us. His lecture was pieced together, though, as it started before lunch, and restarted before the 3:30 break. It ended at 5:50, and we cleaned up for the day.

I did, however, have some time to get back to the buffer. I was buffing my neck, and the buffer struck again. No worries...my neck fell, but, there was no structural damage, only finish damage. I asked about drop-filling, but was advised against it, because of lacquer shrinkage, over time. That bothered me, at first,but, I have yet another change in my plans. It is amazing how often your plans, dreams, and goals can change. I did have a few minutes to go back to the buffer, with my body, and I did not drop it or damage it in any way. I am simply not finished buffing, so we will see what tomorrow brings.

Another side note, and the last picture of the day, while my cleats were drying, I went out to the thickness sander, and scalloped the ends of my bridge. Just thought that I would share.

I am truly going for a Martin-style dreadnought, so, better make the bridge Martin!

That is all that I have today. I may not get much time for work on my acoustic tomorrow, as we will be evaluating guitars for repair. But, I will get as many pictures as I can, and I will definitely document as much as I can.

The bridge is lookin great, very classic and classy.
I bet this is a standard thing and not a big deal, but as someone pretty new to building/major repairs, I find the use of magnets to be GENIUS. I had wondered how repairs like that were done and can't believe I didn't think of that. But, again, i'm quite a noob with a lot of stuff, but i'm learning! haha

And if it's not a pain, i'd be really interested in the rebuild, I just recently put together a parts bass for a friend from several peoples basses that was quite labor intensive to get it working together.
 
Moose...I agree with you completely! I had read about repair magnets, but, when I was doing most of my repair work (90's)...this was technology that had yet to reach me. It is truly genius! As far as the rebuild, shoot me a PM and we will get in touch. There were several steps involved, but, no big deal when you look at the big picture.
