Hendrix was a sponge, absorbing everything and putting his spin on it. So was / is Townshend. No new news here.
So? Who did Townshend copy?
they did different stuff with it--which is cool.
They both came up with their own thing.
I mean, he definitely did. They all copied each other.
Pretty kewl attacking a guy who can’t defend himself 
So what? And Robert Plant did the mop of golden locks on a stick body thing better.

I couldn't care less: he said/she said arguments seldom hold water and are typically as far from objectivity as you can get. This kind of argument is usually fruitless.
Hendrix was part Cherokee and grew up in a creative household. Pete Townshend, not so much. Feel free to share the pre blues rock heritage in the Townshend household in the 50s. The American blues and a little gospel were important childhood influences on Jimi.
All that said, and I love The Who, Townshend was replicating Wray 100%. There is almost no discernible difference, he didn’t try to be subtle about it. Again, love The Who, but Townshend is not a unique enough musician to have influenced Hendrix.

The only thing Jimi Hendrix copied was destroying his guitar.

yep ... he totally copied the guitar destroying thing ... but the way Hendrix played was quite different than Pete
And the feedback stuff, and shoving the guitar into the amps. They were rivals, but friends who had respect for each other. I love both as players.
I heard Rick Beato said Steve Vai is just Joe Satriani with more Lydian licks and a haircut.
Two musically creative geniuses who likely influenced each other in some ways, and ultimately changed rock history in their own ways. If Pete influenced Jimi, my response is: "And?"
My understanding is that Jimi's guitar hero was Eric Clapton, but what difference does it make.
