Roger Waters: Pink Floyd

Some people would say Jeff Berlin or Anthony Jackson are better... :ninja:

And some wouldn't.

It's art, it's subjective.

It's like saying "Who's better, Picasso or Escher?"

Think about it....what a stupid question that would be.

Although I'm sure somewhere out there someone is making a silly argument like that...."Picasso had better brush technique, Escher was a hack". :D

You really can't say any one artist is better than the next, it's about communicating ideas, touching people, getting people to react.

If you want to take them out of context, and pit one against the other in some display of "technical ability" or "proper technique", or "who can play a Dminormixolydianwankfestmodethingy the fastest", well fine....now you have an athletic event....it's the Olympics. BFD.

Unless someone can't get their ideas across due to limitations, or is a detriment to the collective effort (as in a band) of communication, then they are as good as the next guy in my book.

I think Waters was able to get his ideas across just fine, both as a writer AND a musician.

Of course, I think Dee Dee Ramone was a kick ass player too.

I was irritated with his staunch and overblown defense of Roger Waters, but now I'm amused by it because it's so ridiculous. I really don't care if I play or sing better than him or not...I can't make a movie better than George Lucas but I still hated the Star Wars movies. I can't host the Tonight Show better than Jay Leno but I still hated it. So what? Get over it.

Get over what?, I'm not here to convince you that RW is good or try to make you like his music.I personaly could care less who any of you like and dislike.
Roger Waters' career speaks for itself, that's not the issue here. The issue is that a lot of you must think highly of your bass playing skills since you consider yourself his equal and as hard as it is for me to say "Better".
I'm sure most of you probably have a YouTube channel, why don't you send me the links so I can be straightened out. Should be easy to post something a little more "impressive" than "Careful With That Axe Eugene" from Pompeii.

i stopped reading after the first page or two. i'm a pink floyd fan, but didn't like anything they did without roger waters, he was integral. i don't like roger waters solo stuff though, and also know that the coolest floyd bass lines on animals & the wall were done by david gilmour. roger said in interviews he's not much of a bass player, i believe him, i still love him and old pink floyd to death,

Again, it's a ridiculous request. The level that someone else plays at is totally immaterial to their opinion of someone else's playing, and the reason you're not getting anyone "proving" themselves to you is because nobody needs to prove anything to you to make their opinion valid. I certainly didn't wake up today and say, "Hey, I have to prove myself to some stranger on TB I've never heard of in order for him to take my opinion seriously." Take it or don't; I really don't care. I just like laughing at your posts because you consider it the utmost of importance that people prove themselves to you. I don't have anything to prove to you.

This video is a perfect example, starts simple then goes into a jam in the middle, In live performances he changed what he was playing (like all of them from PF) as the songs went a long and THAT is what I'm talking about. You can't learn this, you either have it or you don't. I'm sure some here can do it as well, but better, like the other guy wrote, I'ld love to hear it. Some of you act like the guy couldn't even tune a bass.

All I can say is this is freakin GOLD.

Still, I can play this stuff myself, and so can a lot of other mediocre bassists.

You also said that he was an "average" bassist.
Most of the people at this forum are average bassists, so in your opinion Roger Waters is just a regular joe that you'ld catch at the local club.
That's absurb and leads me to believe that you (and others) probably never listened to much Floyd to begin with.

Alright. Against my better judgment I will post a link to a gig where my band covered a Pink Floyd song. This is "Money" and I hereby make the claim that my bass playing is at least as clean and articulate as Roger Waters' playing.

Nice! OK, you're the only one in the thread allowed to comment on Roger's bass playing.

OK, here's a thought, a lot of people have commented that his playing was just right for the music, and I'd agree. Love the tone, love the space he leaves. But, let's face it, he's probably not the most technically gifted of bass players (accepting his talents as a lyricist, composer, arranger and producer). Now, suppose he had been a much more technically able bass player, do you think he would still have stuck to simplicity and space? Do you think that his contributions might not still have been just right for the music?

Sorry if that's a bit too much like contemplating my navel, but I just wonder how relevent his playing ability was to the final piece. Personally I love the RW era Floyd, find the post RW Floyd polished but uninspiring and think that the RW solo stuff is interesting but ultimately doesn't make me return for more. I think Floyd at their best were all about the sum of their parts rather than individual brilliance (Syd Barrett excepted). But I think that's also true of most rock bands.

OK, I'll stop before I dissapear up my own proverbial.

Hmmm....well.....no.

I think you are rushing. Frankly the whole band is.

Now, as always, maybe it's context. If you were playing with Gilmore, Wright and Mason, you might have nailed it.

But you don't on this clip.

In my best Simon Cowell voice - "Sorry, just being honest."

The forum ruler gives you permission.

Let it go dude ffs.

Good job on the song there, was it as good as Roger Waters?
No but I give you credit for posting it. This is about the easiest PF song there is, let's see one of "Echoes" or "Careful" from Pompeii.
I had both of these (and lots of other PF) posted on YT for about a year before I deleted that account because YT was complaining about copyright infringement.
The vids were a big hit and MANY people often asked me how I did certain parts of the songs (mainly these two songs). I lost 1200+ subscribers but according to some here they should have been able to play this **** in their sleep.
I intend to redo these vids even better than before, then post them on YT, I'll be sure to link 'em here.
Because unlike some around here ('cept hbarcat) I'll back up anything I have to say when it comes to whether or not a certain musician is excellent, average or mediocre or I'll say NOTHING at all. Something a few here at TB should learn to do. PUT UP of SHUT UP imo.

You hit the nail on the head. The magic of Waters-era Pink Floyd (Meddle through Final Cut) has been the entire album, the "musical journey/drama" that you experience when listen to an album from start to finish. In my opinion, you really can't accuse Roger, Nick or Rick of virtuosity in their respective instruments...but it doesn't matter. The music has always been about atmosphere and musical understatement ultimately creating the album "concept".

For instance, Roger had crappy singing voice. Case in point:
That's really bad, honestly. But that's not the point. You can really sense the pain and despair in his voice, that's what makes makes the song. Musically, there's really not much going on around the vocal. It's starkly simple, almost empty...but it does the trick. There are absolutely no awe-inspiring, award-worthy vocal or instrumental performances in there, but it's a GREAT song!
