Roger Waters: Pink Floyd

ok, let me start off by saying that Roger Waters is possibly my favorite bass player ever.
Some are saying he was a mediocre bassist, which at the time, may have been true, but I think the status of "mediocre" has changed over time. Back in the day, when there weren't as many crappy musicians, he may have been considered mediocre. However, I think nowadays he would be considered a very good bassist. Here's how I see it:

A while ago(1970's-ish):
Mediocre- Roger Waters
Advanced- Geddy Lee

Current Time-
Mediocre- Pete Wentz
Advanced- Roger Waters

see what I mean?

I see what you are sysing but it works both ways. I would never consider RW an advanced bass player today. Not even close. Now you have guys like Wooten, Manrig, Nitti, guys that are elite and have influenced many players to become better. That means that the advanced players today (under the elite guys) ars still way ahead of RW.

Anyway, I dont think anyone can argue he was not a brilliant songwriter, showman or any of that. If anything he was probably more "advanced" or ahead of his time back in the 70s. Now, with bass becoming much more of a forefront instrument he looks more pedestrian compared to what many guys are doing today.

yeah i see what you mean, it has gotten more complex in some areas.

The forum ruler gives you permission.

Let it go dude ffs.

Good job on the song there, was it as good as Roger Waters?
No but I give you credit for posting it. This is about the easiest PF song there is, let's see one of "Echoes" or "Careful" from Pompeii.
I had both of these (and lots of other PF) posted on YT for about a year before I deleted that account because YT was complaining about copyright infringement.
The vids were a big hit and MANY people often asked me how I did certain parts of the songs (mainly these two songs). I lost 1200+ subscribers but according to some here they should have been able to play this **** in their sleep.
I intend to redo these vids even better than before, then post them on YT, I'll be sure to link 'em here.
Because unlike some around here ('cept hbarcat) I'll back up anything I have to say when it comes to whether or not a certain musician is excellent, average or mediocre or I'll say NOTHING at all. Something a few here at TB should learn to do. PUT UP of SHUT UP imo.

There is nothing better then a totally pointless arguement to read over a cup of coffee to take the stress away from my work, thanks for being a good source of chuckles....

Look your a great bass player and because of that your opinion is more valued then anyone else's especially in this thread.

I know Jimmy has made a point to not include personal achievment into the arguement but you might do yourself a favor and piece together his resume as well as many others on this site. There are some really well accomplished bass players floating around.

That being said I don't see where your challenge has any bearing on the opinions here.

There are some big wheels here on TB I'd like to hear.
It's weird there's not a LOT more links. Why? I'd like to hear the music behind the talk.

I believe there was one individual who made the assertion that he was a better bass player and provided clips. If this was the case I wouldn't be surpised if you haven't witnessed some of the great talents floating around your missing the boat wasting time in the who's the coolest rock bassist threads.

Do you expect Michael Mannring or some other well known TB pro to come in and submit their application for the "I'm better then Roger Water's competition"? :rollno:

I have not made an assertion that I was better player then Roger Waters (FOR THE RECORD) but if someone did and they said Roger wasn't good would their level of play somehow bring more merit to the arguement?

I'm not sure what you mean (?) and I wasn't necessarily referring to you. I'd just like to hear/see the gigs of the big wheels of TB. But if you're a pro and/or an authority please, do post links. I assume there's some hot stuff here but also thinking I ought to test that assumption. Just asking people to share their music and not only talk. Hearing some cool stuff from TB'ers would make TB even better.

I was fotunate enough to see PF twice. Once just before they released the " Wish you were Here" vinyl and during the original "Animals' tour. Both shows were stunning and still stand out in my mind 30+ years later. I think Waters prefers to refer to himself as a performer and composer. As per his skills as a bass player, I think his best attributes was taking simple lines and rifs and weaving them into something that sounded creative, clever and catchy. There is no denying that his playing helped define the PF sound and also served to influence many bass players and may continue to do so.

I saw them a couple of times at their peak, doing the complete Echoes and Dark Side of the Moon albums live. I never thought of Waters as a bassist as much as I did a band leader and writer. That said, he held his own and contributed to the song and the sound. Hearing that simple, effective bassline in Echoes in quadraphonic sound was pretty cool.

Roger Waters is the 1 and only reason I decided to learn bass. After hearing Pigs (3 different ones) I fell in love with the bassline. It wasonly after I wasplaying for a month or so that I learned it wasn't him playing, but oh well :D

Waters IS without a doubt a competent bassist. Listen to this:

The second one is him doing it live at a rehersal.

He's not too special and I believe many are better, but he's not a joke that's for sure.

Yes, he played bass in Pink Floyd, but that was not his true talent... If you want to prove to me that you're "better" than Roger Waters, write an album that stays on the Billboard charts for 15 years and we'll call it even.

Granted that is true but it was not the point as you can make a case that Adam Clayton is one of the greats as his band sold 150 million albums. Why keep bringing up his accomplishments? He has gotton plenty of props here for all his songwriting and albums. If his bass playing was so stellar you would not need to bring it up would you?
