Rondo Music basses

Alright, so here's what im going to do!

I have $500 to spend on a bass. I want an Sr506, so what im going to do is.

Sell my '99 Fender American Standard Jazz (Tritone w/RW Fretboard) for $850.

=======================

Added that, I'm at 1350. Get an SR506 (450-630)

Now i'm from 720-900

=======================

Then Im going to get a Squier VM Jazz (300)

Now I'm from 420-600

=======================

Then on Link Removed, which is the best Fretless 5?

If i get the most expensive one, I'm at 130-310. This leaves me room to get some GHS Boomers for my 6er. Maybe a flat 5 set for my fretless 5 as well.

=======================

Good plan? And what's the best fretless 5 there? I need a 6er desperately. Need to keep a good old Jazz up my sleeve (I like the VM more than my american sadly. I played it in the shop too. no real setup.)

I need a fretless 5 for some BTBAM stuff, but it can wait!

So yeah. Input?

At 14 years old I'm not sure you 'desperately need a 6'r'... or 3-4 or more different basses for that matter.

Buy a decent bass and spend 3-4 years REALLY getting to know it. I suggest going with a 5-string which you could swap between stringing BEADG, and EADGC. At 14 years old your vision of what you want, need, and desperately need will change dramatically x10 while your playing and tastes in music change over the next 10+ years. Then will continue to change.

IMHO.

Why are you doing all of this? I'd keep what you have (and I'm not a Fender guy). If you need a fretless, get one...I just got an SX SJB-62 five string in Lake Placid Blue and I love it. I went with the SX because it was cheap, I wasn't sure if I was going to dig the fretless and they get good reviews on here. I just don't understand getting rid of what you have...it's a good bass. To each his own I suppose...good luck!

+1, if I did everything I thought was a good idea at 14 :rollno:

Honestly, you should do what you think would be best for your playing and playing style, I'm not here to tell you otherwise. However, I feel like you will regret selling that Fender... I have 2 Ibbys and 3 Fenders, and its a great thing to be able to switch off between the 2 brands. The Ibanez's are much more modern sounding while the Fenders just have that great old school vibe and sound in 'em. I've heard nothing but great things about the Rondo line of basses, so I would also consider keeping the fender and getting a Rondo and keeping a little bit of coin in your pocket!

I play Protest the Hero and Between the buried and Me.

Because of this I need a 6.

I think 6s are more comfortable than 5s anyways. And at the moment, I desperately need the extended range. Even if my tastes change, I know there will be a time I need the range.

And like I said, the fretless 5 can wait. That ones just for fun. :)

Man, don't sell your MIA Jazz for a SR506. That's going from a pretty good bass to something mediocre.
You've got $500 already, just be patient and save up the little bit more you need to go to get the 506.

if you want a cheap fretless, go with one from Rondo... but expect some work. I got that Douglas WPB-980 Fretless. it sounds incredible. its great quality for the most part. Some things to expect though-action is HIGH. pop the nut off and file it down, and pop the saddles off the bridge and file the notch down. doesn't really matter what you use. about 2 mm should do.

go over the neck with fine sand paper to smooth out notches, and smooth the sides of the neck. they will cut you otherwise. also, the tuners are sh*t. they might break.

over all though, once you go through that, it is an incredible bass for the money.

Why would you say it's mediocre? Get it set up and put some good strings on, and if you can play well, it's fine!

Example right there. Yeah, I know he's good, but it forces me to work on my technique. It's just gotten to where I don't really love my Jazz so much. Although I may need it, considering im going to do the school Jazz band, and the bassist is the frontman.

I need the low action with the insane amount of tapping I do every day. The Jazz sounds like crap with the low action.

Of course, my strings are worn to the core in multiple frets, so they're like palm muting. This gives a horrible dead sound.

Also, on top of me desperately needing a 6er, i may very well possibly land a great band that's going to tour the triangle area. They need a low B. haha.
It has former members of Nephilym, Death to Dreams, and 13th Knot.

Revised, I think:

Sell the J Bass

This puts me at 1357.85 now

Buy a Squier VM Jazz

now I'm at 1058.85

Get a used SR506

This puts me from 708.85 - 608.85

Now get the fretless brice 6er on there.

408.85-308.85

Get a set of GHS Boomers for the 6 and Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkies for the Squier.

puts me at about $362 - $262

Now I have money for other things. Start saving for a 410. :D

I owned a SR706, 506, and currently own a SR535. They are well built, but I was referring to the tone of them. They are mediocre sounding compared to MIA Fenders, 55-02s, and other basses out there. They also have this annoying "clanky" sound if you play the strings with a bit of conviction. This is something I've never had a problem with with my MIA Fenders, 55-02, or even cheap Yamaha RBX170.
