Roscoe Beck basses

I started learning bass in 2010 and purchased The Ultimate Beginners Series book published by Alfred Music. It came with a dvd that followed the book with lessons led by three pros, one of which is Roscoe Beck. In the dvd, he displays his basses. A four string and a five string signature models. Both have a five position switch similar to a Strat switch. What I noticed is that the pups appeared to be jazz pups with in line configurations. Meaning the neck and bridge pups appear to be paired jazz pups.

My questions are, (1) anyone have these basses and do you recommend? (2) do the pup configurations produce superior sound, tone, etc.?

(3) I have an opportunity to purchase a fiver. Should I go for it?

I have played the bass and it sounds great but the price is $850.00. I am not sure of the manufacture date.

For $850?!?!?! I'll tell you what. Just calm down, and give me your address, and, the seller's phone number. That way, I can hire some crackhead hit man to snuff you out. Because by then, I'll have about the same amount (or less!) invested in knockin' you off, and buying the bass, for what I'd normally pay for one of those. :D

You really, really need to jump ALL OVER that bass, for that kinda scratch. Great deal. What color is it? Green, or Shoreline Gold? :bassist: Highly desirable colors.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. PM me to give me your info, and, the sellers info....... :hiding:

Yes, the price of these has gone crazy lately.

The RB V is my favorite Fender that I have ever owned, and that includes a really wonderful '66 Jazz. It will give you a true "old-school" 60s Jazz sound and you can dial in a lot of other things, including some MM and P Bass tones.

I've owned two RB5s and still have one. Excellent bass. These days, $850 is a good price. I paid $640 and $700 for mine, both used, both from GC, but that was several years ago.

Beautiful! They need to bring these back under a new model name. These would go thru the roof.

New model name? What for?

Over time the reasons for the discontinuation of the 5 string may have come to light. One reason that I've seen cited is that Fender was no longer able to source the bridge that came with the 5 string version of the bass. Roscoe had spec'd out a bridge from Gotoh that was one of the deciding factors in him greenlighting the signature model. According to him, the Gotoh bridge made such a difference from the other bridges that had been tested that it was an intrinsic part of that bass. And when it wasn't available anymore? Bye bye Roscoe Beck 5 string!
