Roscoe Club

You guys ever get so tired of trying to sell a bass that you just say screw it and keep it? Yeah me neither. LOL. Someone is going to buy my 62 RI Jazz. I’ve noticed there’s a glut of used Jazz basses on the market. I guess the flavor has changed.

OK sorry…. Back to Roscoe chatter. :)

I get anxiety just thinking about listing a bass for sale. It’s really more about what can happen during the shipping process. As BB once said, the thrill is gone!

I know the feeling. I have sold some basses recently and some sold in hours and that made me think I priced them too low. I have some items for sale now and they are not moving for what I think they are worth.

The good news is that now that I bought my Century 5 and my SKB 6 I am a happy camper. My collection is less in number but much better in quality.

Good luck to you that are selling equipment.

Or Fenders lol.

I really tried to get into the Fender game and enjoy it. For everyone who says they *LOVE* Fender, I suppose there is a guy like who just could never find it. I can get *the* sound they're known for out of them, and a sound that I like out of them, but they never played well in my hands.

Thusly, they never lasted more than a year before they were sold, traded, or (in one case) given away.

I never liked a “P” bass until I got my Roscoe Classic a couple years ago. I did like my MIJ Geddy Lee. Otherwise I don’t have a great love for Fender. I liked my Sadowsky 4 string jazz. My current 5 has a neck that’s a little thick. There’s a Roscoe Classic Jazz (the black one with blocks and binding) that I’d maybe give a shot. If a bass doesn’t sell for what I think it’s worth I’ll keep it. Not like a Sadowsky is a pile of crap, I just prefer the Roscoe 5 string neck.

I was a Roscoe/Lakland 5ver (still am) only guy for about 10 years straight, but my wife bought me a 76 Fender P bass for my 45th birthday. I got it setup correctly and added flats and it got me hooked. Now, I only use if needed, but it got me hooked on some of the more vintage bass/sound, so I bought my 83 Fender Jazz which has its own sound. Before, I had tried pretty much all basses out there, I was endorsed by Warrior for about 13 years, but Roscoe changed all that, and then Lakland.

I recently put my Lakland 55-63 on the sale/trade block, but after playing at church, it brought back the reason I have it.

I have the same anxiety that you guys have about shipping, I had one weird one while buying on Reverb which ended in my favor, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Once on a TB trade, the trader emailed me about something on the bass that was wrong (I forgot), but I asked him to take it to a luthier and I gave him $50 to cover a setup to be fair.

I recently tried to get a Sadowsky 4, but they only come in 1 1/2" necks unless you go Custom Shop. Am I the only player who has to have a 1.75 width? Sheesh.

My main gig basses are a Fender P and a J (both with P necks) with Thunderbird electronics, never fell in love with Fender PUPs.

I saw that as well- I was wondering if Fender had discontinued the “American Originals” series, the current iteration of the AVRI series ;)

I’ve got a custom shop relic jazz that I need to get around to listing myself… so there will be one more

I don’t mind the 1.5” nut on a jazz. I thought I wouldn’t like the 1.75” on my P but it’s fine. The one thing tha Sadowsky 5 has going for it is the string spacing and scale are the same as my Roscoe Classic P. Makes switching pretty easy.

Also, I think I discovered yesterday that whatever bass I play first that day is the one I like the most. I played my Roscoe first the, then the Sadowsky and love the Roscoe. I ply the Sadowsky first and then the Roscoe and think, hmm, maybe the Sadowsky isn’t that bad.
Im a real piece of work that’s for sure.

Well this is a Roscoe thread so I guess I’d be surprised if you guys said anything other than your praise for Roscoes’ (and displeasure for Fenders) but I see things a bit different. I grew up playing Fender P-basses and Jazz basses so I guess that they always felt fine to me. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing like a Roscoe 5 or 6 neck profiles but a Fender 4 feels great to my hands. And the sound is in a league of its own. Leo just got it right from the start. I’ve never seen the need to purchase a boutique Fender copy when a good Fender sounds and plays wonderful.

Truth is, I started back playing at church a few months ago and a couple weeks ago I played my Fender Player P-bass with Fender flats and it sounded wonderful. Probably sounds crazy to some of you but I left my Fodera, Roscoe, Cirrus and Spector at home and played with an $800 Fender MIM bass! I’ve got a quite diverse collection now and I’ve gotten to the place where they’re just tools of the trade so I use what fits the gig best (and a P-bass with flats fit).

Not great live stream sound but it'll give you an idea ..... music starts at 6:11

The flats sounded so good in the live mix (huge sanctuary) that I installed a set of TI flats on my Roscoe and Spector. After comparing them a few days the Spector was the clear winner, due to the bridge p/u being so close to the bridge. Growl for days! Probably due Roscoe being an LG with the slanted p/u’s being a bit far from the bridge.

Don’t get me wrong. Fender was and always will be one of my faves. These are the only non Roscoe basses I have. I as just saying it’s obviously not a good time to sell a Jazz Bass lol.
