Roscoe Club

@Mighty Thumb : It will be an online event, not sure of url. As soon as they choose the date and define the link, I'll be happy to post it, if someone else doesn't first : )
According to the organizer, it will be over Zoom, so no fb necessary.

This also means no pants are necessary, but remember this when angling your camera

Just "keeping tabs" on things on this early June Friday. Speaking of tabs, check out this nice Diamondwood board with mini lines ("tabs" in KR's vernacular). Notice all the upgraded features on this Standard +, too. Evolution in the Roscoe shop.

I’ve been contemplating a build and thinking of going with wenge for either full neck/fb or just neck. I have a full wenge neck on my *guess* bass and like the unique sound of it, good fundamental, not a lot of overtones ringing out. I’m not sure what plays the biggest role in causing that, perhaps pickups more so than the woods, I dunno. It’s a PJ btw. With that said, how’s everyone liking their wenges? Any particular combinations that stand out above others? Or wenge/pickup combinations? Thanks in advance!

That’s great that it’ll be over Zoom, how does one sign up for it?
After 2 1/2 years of steady Zoom and Teams meetings at work I could tell some stories….

Possibly the last unused piece of black Diamondwood in existence!

Here's that Century Signature 3006 I was talking about buying internationally. It arrived safely, and DHL did not ask for any Customs fees, so unless I get a bill in the mail eventually, seems like I may have read the documentation correctly about there being no customs fees between Colombia and the US.

The only negative on this deal is that the guy cleverly selected his pics to hide the 12th fret inlay of the original buyer's initials. Honestly, that's a bit of a bummer, but it's a nice enough instrument overall that I don't care too much.

The seller did not know much about the woods, but I think I've got most of it figured out... Let me know your thoughts on the neck woods.

Top: seems to be Walnut burl.
Body: Swamp Ash, and surprisingly light.
Fretboard: Ebony
Neck: Signature wedge. But what are the woods? I know Keith did some with cherry stringers in that era, so I think that's what the "skinny bits" are. But the center is a puzzle. It's definitely more brown and less purple that any examples of purpleheart I have here to compare. Still might be a more brownish purpleheart though. Pretty sure it is not cocobolo. I have an example of that and it's much darker.
Pickups and preamp: Aguilar

Had a little bit of backbow when it arrived, but I've been making patient, conservative adjustments over the last few days, and I think I've got it set up how Iike now. It's a very good example of a Roscoe 6, and I'm glad I picked it up, despite the oddness of having some unknown guy's initials on the fretboard...
Well, it took a full month to work everything out, but I finally have that situation resolved with the bass I bought on Reverb that was reported stolen. Long story short, I submitted a PayPal refund claim which was decided in my favor. Then, rather than shipping the bass back to the original owner (which would have been outrageously expensive right now), we negotiated a deal for me to pay him for it. He was in the process of trying to sell it anyway when it got stolen in transit, so in the end it worked out nicely for both of us. It was a lot of work and stress though to get it all figured out. Very happy that it's over.

I just love a happy ending!:)

That is great news. I congratulate you for handling this situation in the best way.

My newly acquired SKB 3006 and Century 3005 have been taking turns at church on Sundays. I am surprised to hear that the Swamp Ash body/Wenge fingerboard Century sounds warmer than the Mahogany body/Ebony fingerboard SKB. Both basses have figured Maple tops. The SKB has the newer Bartolini all in one module where the Century has the older style preamp with two modules. I wonder if the new module has accentuated highs. Anybody know for sure?

Well, I think my Sadowsky experiment is over. The neck is just too big. I’ve been playing my Century for the last couple gigs and that neck…just no words. I think the DR Hi-Beams give it a little something more as well. I’ve got gigs for the next couple weekends and I think I’ll use my Century and Classic P for my choices.
I did get an offer to trade my 5 for basically the 4 string version, but I don’t want/need 3 basses at gigs. I need a P/flats for classic stuff, jazz and singer/songwriter stuff. The Century will do the rest.
I think I’d be better off just trying to sell the Sadowsky 5 and go with a pair of Roscoe basses that can do almost anything.

Ebony will be brighter, and if the mahogany is on the heavier side then it'll have more top end as well.

Same thing happened to me with my Lakland 55-63 (Dual J). I played it today at church and realized that I wanted to keep it. As @Fred312b says, “for now”…
Yep, never play a bass you’re planning on selling.

There’s so many good ones now, it is hard to decide which ones to get rid of. Granted, I was away from mine for 6 weeks for work, but played them all yesterday and now I want to keep them all :rollno:

Looking at the top of this new Roscoe reminds me of the celestial screen views shown when a Star Trek captain engages warp speed, and the stars melt into a speedy blur.

It reminds me of ... "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth".

Definitely the best looking piece of buckeye burl that I've seen!

The link to the virtual master class was just posted a few hours ago. Tickets are through Eventbrite.

Jimmy Haslip Bass Masterclass (Virtual)

Looking forward to this one!
On my calendar as well. I had an actual in person lesson with him 10 years ago. It was a little intimidating but also awesome. He is a wonderful human and treated me with the utmost respect. I just picked up my new 6 string the night before. Here’s a couple pics. Myself with 2 bass legends. Keith the builder and Jimmy the player.

That's awesome Steve! I also got to study with him over a few years, whenever he was passing through Kansas City. Changed my world!
