Roscoe Club

KR's string set of choice (nickel rounds), straight from the Roscoe factory, available for your purchase in bulk (uh oh, I only have 1 set left). Add gauge .032 for high C if you play a 6

View attachment 4708844

I use D'Adarrio EXL-170-5SL for my 5's and that set plus a .032 for my 6's. It is the same as the Roscoe set except the B string is .130 instead of .125.

I keep coming back to these strings. The only bass I presently have with other strings is a G&L Kiloton 5 that has DR Blues on it. It sounds so good with those strings that I have not changed them.

I like the Sadowsky just fine, and so does the band, but I don't really NEED 2 5 string basses as I play my P a lot. I like the aggressive sound of the Sadowsky for some rock stuff. My Roscoe just seems a little reserved. I don't want to change the electronics as I mostly like this bass. I mean, I've kept it for 10 years. That's a lifetime for me. I just want it to be a little more aggressive, hence trying SS strings again. I know some of you use Roscoes for heavier music than I play and are successful so I know it can be done. This bass neck has felt like home from day 1. I'd like to just use my 2 Roscoes and be good.

What would you put on it should it become your worship team bass?

I would use it with what works for the cover band. I don't feel the need to get quite as particular at church as almost anything I bring works. I use the P a lot, and a 5 when I need some low end love.

Kind of what I thought you'd say or at least how I approach it. I am almost always playing a 5 these days, but I do still have a 4 or 2. I just can't decide what I want on the Roscoe. I have flats on a BN and Symphony-- P bass-ish-- and rounds on a BN, MTD 535, fretless, and Alembic. I feel like I need flats, but not sure.

@SteveC - It sounds like you've played enough DR strings that you already know how they sound, but as another DR player, I just wanted to chime in and say I think you are probably on the right track switching to Hi Beams to get the tonal changes you're looking for.

I've landed on Sunbeams and occasionally Nickel Lo-Riders as my main strings lately because I'm going for a warmer default tone nowadays, plus I've developed a pedalboard setup that lets me do the clean lows / dirty highs thing when I want more upper mid presence. But if I needed to stay 100% clean and have the bass speak more clearly in the upper mids, I'd definitely consider changing back to the stainless Hi Beams.

I still have a set of Hi Beams on one Roscoe, so I was able to do a quick comparison just now. These are older, so they actually have less zing in the treble than my much newer Sunbeams -- but there's still an extra mid-to-upper-mid clarity that really "speaks" nicely and would be very present in a mix. By contrast, underneath the brand new string treble zing, the Sunbeams speak more strongly in the low mids and bass. I can't identify the exact mid frequencies that are more or less prominent in each string -- I wish my ear was that good! -- But there's definitely a different personality to the mids when comparing nickel and stainless. I used to just think "stainless is brighter", but it's way more complex and subtle than that, I realize now.

I put the DR Hi Beams on last night. Definitely a different sound and feel (I haven't used them for a LONG time so I kind of forgot how they sound and feel) from the nickels. I have a jazz gig rehearsal on Tuesday and a gig on Wednesday so we'll see how they handle that style of music. I don't have a cover band gig for a couple weeks but I may try this bass and see how it goes. I can always pull out the Sadowsky. I think I'm going to take the nickels of and try SS on that bass as well. Maybe I'll give SS a try on the Sadowsky.

I finally opened the box that arrived yesterday. I spent a few minutes opening up and playing a little. I’m pretty impressed… still… again… with the tone and variety. Plus, it’s kind of a looker. The strings are more tame than I expected, so I might keep them for a bit. Anyway a I took a few photos and I know most of you have seen this bass before. Happy to be part of the family.

Wow @BassJuju , everything just works on your gorgeous, new bass. Here we sit in the club thread, debating and trying to figure the best specs for a build, while someone like Donovan says to KR, "Hey, why don't you build me something that you think I might like. ." It's a mindset based in an old school leap of trust and faith, paying impressive dividends in this example. Enjoy, enjoy

Yep… The fact that Donovan said build me something and Keith had freedom to choose was a big reason I said yes. I liked it when I played it, but didn’t take it because I was leaning a different direction. The more I looked at it, the more I liked it. After 15 minutes of noodling around this morning, I’m glad I got it.

Schallers coming and considering strings, but should be gigable in a week or 2.

I tell you a set of strings that I’m really enjoying these days. Fodera nickel RW. They really sounded good on my Fodera so I thought that I’d give a set a chance on my Roscoe. Very nice tone! They’ve got a bit warmer midrange growl than the D’addario and DR nickel RW’s. The thing that’s unique about them (verses most every other nickel RW) is that they are nickel clad on the inner and outer wrap. Most every other nickel RW string is steel on the inner core and nickel only on the outer wrap

@blueacid4l It is my estimate that ordering a passive LG Standard/+ with a single "P" pickup would fall within the "base" pricing and would not be considered an upgrade. There's only 1 person to verify this, and it's KR. Give him a call, as he loves to talk about new builds, especially if they fall outside the "norm."

I think I'll do that, I actually have some "outside the box" things I'd want to see if he'll do with it.

I already feel like I bother the poor guy too much, lol. I've got my custom headless that I've been waiting on for just over 12 months. He mentioned a summer delivery looks realistic.

He has only shown me a few "sneak peak" shots of a headstock I asked him to make for the headless to be able to still hang it in a wall hanger. I'm REALLY excited.
