Roscoe Club

Got an LG back in the house - a flame maple cherry burst LG 3005 with what I think is spanish cedar body and a maple/purpleheart neck, BEM board. This is a great dark, growly bass with the Roscoe barts! It took a setup great, too.

New Roscoe family pictures in the order that I think I bought them in:

Beautiful collection Adam! And you apparently put a lot of thought into which ones to get (based on the varied wood types of the ones with soap bars and the others with different pickup configurations).
While I've had many, many Roscoes over the years I've only had as many as 3 Roscoes at one time. These days, while I do have a bass for every day of the week, I only have one Roscoe.
You, Scott and Fritz definitely have incredible Roscoe collections.:)

Surprised to see no 4-string bass(es). Thought you still enjoyed those in your mix. Beautiful 5s and 6 (which all have 4-strings built in anyway)

You are correct, sir! My only Roscoe 4 was the birdseye LG PJ that went to Scott. I do enjoy a good 4-string for the right job, but these days they are FSOs: Ps and Js, nothing modern.

Yes! My biggest criteria for the variety is pickups and placement. I suppose the closest dupe within the pickup realm is the century signature and the LG custom, which both have Roscoe Barts. Even with those two basses, I'm running the signature as a single (split) coil and the slanted LG in full series.

I've noticed I like ash bodies for most things, so I have a lot of ash, 2 mahogany, and 1 sp. cedar.

Always fun to see the big collections.

I'm really looking forward to some updated photos from Scott and Fritz! @armybass, you can't wait until every single one arrives because there's always something in the works with you! ;)

I have to say that this club is one of the reasons I ordered a Roscoe. I’ve been part of way too many clubs over the years. They seem to digress into bickering about this piece of bling or this design which only seems like a good idea or how to make yankee pot roast. Y’all love these basses and primarily talk about them.

I’d noticed that there was great love of the brand in another forum, where I picked up a great yankee pot roast recipe, by the way. Still, never bought one. I know many here love FSO, but they aren’t my thing. I do like the other shapes that Keith makes though.

I got a chance to play a century a while back and put it down. I still liked it a lot. I don’t like the plastic covers on the back, but I suppose that’s not a deal breaker. I liked the tone, this one had Nordie DCB and pre, and it seemed to have good variety.

Anyway, just wanted to drop a note saying kudos on a great club and I’m looking forward to posting some photos and being a member.

I used to only have Roscoes. I love them. But, I found myself needing/wanting a little something different for a couple projects. I have RSO's (Roscoe shaped objects) and FSO's in my quiver. I even have a Roscoe FSO with my Classic P. I have a Sadowsky 5JJ and then of course my Century 5. Each bass does what it does really well. The Classic P with TI flats is my go to these days for a lot of stuff. When that isn't it, I go to my Sadowsky 5JJ. It really has the "jazz" sound I like and is a little more "aggressive" than my Century 5. For my contemporary jazz needs, sometimes church, it's my Century 5. It's nice having a couple options.

I have tried a lot of basses through the years and have come back to Roscoe recently. I have had my Century 6 FL all along and kept it even when my bass teacher and Scott (Armybass) wanted to buy it. I now have the three Roscoe basses and feel like I have everything I need. I also have a G.Gould ggi6, a Modulus Q6 and a G&L Kiloton 5. They all seem to fit into my plans these days and all are great basses. If I could only have two I would keep the Roscoe 6's. Fortunately I can afford to keep more than two.

You may have been the first person with a post that read Roscoe in it that I recall. Can’t say for sure, but I can say that when I think Roscoe, I think, SteveC really likes those. Oh there’s been others to be sure, but you’re the first that comes to mind. You know, I think Keith probably owes you a commission or at least a discount on your next. ;)

I get what you’re saying about tones. It’s one of the reasons I bought this Roscoe. It filled an open space in the arsenal. I’m able to get a lot of those tones from other basses without having an actual FSO. Having said that, I really like the J/MM config you mentioned previously and I am now curious about the “bigger” neck on his classic series. Probably not enough to jump on one, but curious.

I really don’t need more basses, but I can’t wait to get this Century.

I am quite a "fanboy" for sure. I have a non Roscoe in the arsenal (and it's another fine bass) but nothing plays or sounds like a Roscoe. If I had a little more money and things were like they were back a few years ago when one could try/buy/sell/ship basses without going broke, I might try to find a "Roscoe" jazz that would fill the place of the Sadowsky. I never liked a P bass until I played my Roscoe Classic P. Yet, as untouchable as a Roscoe 5 string (modern, not classic) neck is, the Sadowsky has a certain feel that I am getting used to. It helps that my Roscoe P is a 34" scale, 19mm spaced bass, as is the Sadowsky. And for a great jazz tone with a slightly modern take, Sadowsky has been doing it a long time.

I will always be a Roscoe fan. They have done things for me that I would never expect from a custom builder for a nobody like me. I have been treated almost like an endorsing artist. The basses are of outstanding quality, playability, sound and appearance.

You are all very welcome. I LOVE my Century 5 (had it 10 years now) and my Classic P over the last couple years. They are going to be my pair for the new jazz/soul/funk project. The P with flats works great for the Pat Metheny stuff. Not quite Steve Rodby but it's amazingly close to an upright with a pickup. Play close to the neck, play it like an upright, etc. The Century will be my Spyro Gyra, Yellowjackets, etc. bass. And I'll be playing with an amp for a change. No DI/IEM for jazz gigs. Get to take out the Genzler MG350/12T-V Combo. Pretty exciting.

So, I said plastic electronics and battery covers weren’t a deal breaker and they aren’t. However, I do want to replace them. I asked Donovan to see if Keith would make some for a fee of course and he declined. He has his reasons and I’m ok with his thoughts, but I disagree.

So, has anyone else done this or have a recommendations of a luthier to do the work?

I had Roger at THG make me some purpleheart covers. He did a great job. He has the Newer Roscoe covers programmed so you don’t have to send him yours (unless it’s an older model Roscoe).

Practice was good last night. I think the gig will be good next week. Basses sounded great. We aren't doing any "standards" in this group. No play the head, solos, head out stuff. Lots of Metheny for which the P works well. Spyro and the Jackets stuff gets the Century, as do things like Fee Like Makin Love, Affirmation, Do It Again, tunes like that. We have a LOT of Metheny in the mix for starters which is fine as I like all the tunes. We just need to work in some other stuff as well.

We kept volume pretty well in check. The venue we'll be playing is small so my amp will be plenty, but another cab wouldn't be overkill necessarily. Just a little more "presence" might be nice. We'll see how it sounds and if this turns into a regular thing. Nice to play something other than the dance/pop cover band set list for a change.

Later in the month I have a singer/songwriter gig with the guitar player and his wife. Originals and covers at a winery. That'll probably be all P bass. Another nice stylistic change to keep things interesting and me on my toes.
