Roscoe Club

LOL... back at Chuck! Guilty as charged. I dont think I ever owned a mahogany bass before the SKB 6 I got from you..... this SKB 5 is my second and I tell ya.... there is a remarkably distinct tone that just grabs you by your shirt and breaths it's strong coffee breath right in your face.....:D I think I may be turning to the dark side.

Sure you are. It's been....oh....maybe two months since I traded you out of that Century 3005 with J/M pickups.

Chuck

lol

Well it's actually been 3 months but your point is still valid! :D

It was Mrs. Joe laying on of those hands about the head that caused this healing.

I won't lie and say that the laying on of hands wasn't a small factor in the healing!;)

What's up Joe!

Congrats on that Koa sticking around. That is an awesome looking and playing bass.

Hey Keith! Long time no talk to. I'll have to give you a call soon and catch up on everything.

Yeah, mahogany is definitely the bomb! Especially in a Roscoe.
Glad to see that Mahoganut found a good home. That's a killer bass! Best 6'er that I've ever owned.

I want to swap out the Roscoe Barts in my SKB3005 with a pair of Aguilar DCB pickups which should work well with the OBP-3 preamp. When I started to put in my order I noticed the size which matched my SKB3005 pickups was the D4 1.25" W X 4.65" L (32mm X 118mm) Replacement for Bartolini® P4

This is listed like a 6-string pass pickup in bestbassgear.com where I was going to order it from. If this pickup had pole pieces I'd be concerned about proper alignment with strings, but since the DCB uses bar magnets I'm assuming this is not an issue. I'd just like to confirm this is the proper replacement pickup before placing an order.

We use the D4 size/shape for both 5 and 6 string basses, no issues - EXCEPT, the DCB's can be just a tiny bit larger than the Barts, so you may need to "clean" the rout before the DCB will fit cleanly.

FWIW, this is NOT the case with our Bart pickups, the internal structure of these is different, and you must use a 5 string pickup for a 5 string bass, and the same applies for a 6. Same size shell, but different magnet arrangement in them.

I was trying to take in a lot last night on my gig with my initial impression of the the new Roscoe with the Aguilar's but I found them to sound I little more open and vintage-ish and less compressed as Gard says. I did not get to try to check out the slap tone on them yet. Tonight I play in a venue with wooden floors and a big open room as opposed to being stuck in a little corner with carpet so I expect to get a more honest impression of the DCB's.

A "little more open and vintage-ish and less compressed" is the tweak I'd like to make on mine.

Thanks, just ordered a set and am looking forward to trying them out.

Sounds like they may yield a tone very similar to the Nordstrand Big Singles I just put in my SKB3005. Nothing against the Roscoe Barts (they sound good), but I'm really, really liking the tone of this bass with the Big Singles.

The Roscoe crew does beautiful work.

They do indeed. I have owned at least a half dozen different Roscoe basses, I currently own two that I had built for me. There just isn't a better made, sounding, looking or playing bass. Of course, I'm preaching to the choir here, but I say it whenever I get the chance.

I am debating what I may want my 3rd build from them to be. Either that, or the Century PJ that Greg has in his shop.

Here's a shot of Keith and I from the other day. Goes without saying, but all the guys at the shop are so cool and welcoming (even Gard :p).
I haven't gotten to play the bass in a band situation yet, but I've played it a lot acoustically at home. This thing is alive. The notes just leap off the fretboard and sustain forever. It's set up with a dead-straight neck and very low action, and there's no fret buzz at all. I am a happy camper!

Update since I picked up my 1st fretless 6 string Roscoe.

Since this is the 1st & only Roscoe I've played, I have to say this bass has the feel and sound of what I was after. When I bought it from another TB'er I was going on what others had to say about their fretless basses. Being that I had been looking for a 6 string, this came along at the right time and I'm completely satisfied. Low action and so smooth of a fingerboard (diamondwood) and man that B is solid jumping right out at you. Mawh all over the board with a tight and focused sound.

I've played my fair share of fretless basses and this is one of the best.

Roscoe does many things well. They really excel at fretless basses. Best fretless I have every played.

I never could get rid of it. It's that good of a fretless. I could see myself getting more of them but with a different setup.

I've got the one with,

Spanish cedar body
Barts pickups and preamp
Diamondwood fingerboard with maple, purpleheart, maple neck
Flamed maple top

I'm curious on what others have to say about the different setups that are offered, comparatively speaking?
