Roscoe Club

That's my problem with the dcbs as well, too much mids. I wanted something more even with a nod towards a tamed jazz bass sound, considering my bass is a forward-slanted LG, it rules out most pickups with pole pieces( ie, Nordstrand DCs due to misalignment with strings). which means for best results I have to look at ceramic or bladed pickups. Any other recommendations on pickups would be much appreciated.

All this is a pretty strong pitch for Zenblades. I find them to be a jazz bass ish, but more refined and open sound. I found Zen Blade sound clips onlione to be a little misleading for my experience with them. You can hear them pretty well here:

What you’ve just described is exactly the Zen Blades…

That’s Zen Blade all day. The other options I’d suggest would be the Big Blades for a more aggressive sound with a more open top end, or the Bartolini Singularity pickups for a more open top and a low mid focused sound. Both great options if you’re bass is well shielded as both are not hum canceling.

@etoncrow Looking down at the bass as you play (right-hand model): far left is volume: up and to its right is blend; beneath blend is midrange push/pull (low position is high mids, pulled up is low mids); and to the far right is stacked bass/treble. All potentiometers except volume have center detents.

This refers to a typical Bart 3-band, 4-knob setup on a Roscoe. Also, the older preamp circuit has 2 preamp modules in the control cavity. The newer circuit has just 1. Knob functions are same for both preamps.

Here's my situation:

I have a Century 5 string fretless. It's an awesome instrument but I don't play much fretless so it just sits there. I tried selling it but no takers. I could have it fretted but the thing is it has a diamondwood fingerboard. Would it be sacrilegious to convert to fretted? What say you?
You have a PM…

I’m 99% sure you can’t fret the diamond Wood. Or at least Keith wouldn’t do it when I asked him about that a while back. he could do fret lines, but not frets. I could be wrong, but that’s my recollection

Also it would be a shame to fret one of the last diamondwood boards. IMHO

What do you guys think about multiple listings on eBay? Do you think that there is a legit sale on a bass like this, or is it 100% scam? There are 3 to 4 listings for this bass, all different stores.

I like the look of this LG.

No scarf joint or volute. Interesting.

Unlikely a scam, actually common with listings from Japan. There's like a central location where an instrument actually is, and then others can sort of "contract out" listings and get a commission of sorts from the owner/consignor if they close the deal. They'll all use the same pics and everything. While you'd still end up with the instrument, I'd cut out the middlemen by trying to find the source (owner) and see if you can negotiate best price from there directly. Japan has a limited number of high-end dealers, most willing to correspond in English.

Scarf joints were the norm in Roscoe neck construction in the 1990s. Neck construction style evolved to non-scarf, non-volute around the early 2000s.

Later, the volute first appeared as a Signature bass model feature, around maybe 2005. The volute was added to Custom models a few years later when Gard was shop manager.

Note that the Standard and Standard+ models have always lacked the volute, unless ordered as a custom option.

Two things to keep in mind. First, Roscoe model bass names have changed over time. For example, there is factory documentation that before they were called LGs, the models were referred to solely as small body models, in 4-string, 5-string, and Jimmy Haslip 6-string configurations. SKBs were called large body models, and were first offered in 6- and 7-string only.

Second, current models/naming conventions such as LG, SKB, Century, and Standard occurred over many years. Related finish level characteristics of models evolved, too, and continue evolution today with custom options now available for even "Standard" basses.

Info in this post contains rough estimates, and all is subject to confirmation or clarification by Keith Roscoe.

So I hate to be negative but I am going to post my most recent experience. I posted before, which I know some of you saw that it took about three years to get my order from Roscoe. I want to say that I had two previous orders for a P bass and J bass and was very happy. I decide to order the PJ and pay extra for the finish. I was told multiple times that it was almost ready, "just a few more weeks and heard nothing. In one case a whole year went by with no answers to my emails.

I finally got it as you see picture here. It looks great, feels good and sounds good but the input had a short and the pots were dirty and were cutting out. I did not want to send it back or quite honestly deal with it anymore. I paid $107 to get it fixed and cleaned up and just be done with it. While my previous experiences were great, the last one did not go according to plan. I get that there was problems with a pandemic but I had a Valenti and Bluesman Vintage custom build without any of the program.s

Some left some snide comments to my original post. I even got a couple of PMs about those negative comments. I am simply posting here since it's a Roscoe group. Hopefully, others don't have the same experience that I did. View attachment 5260749
I've been waiting a little over two years for my bass. I don't think you're being negative at all. I too have been told "it's almost ready" multiple times. I'm sure it's going to be great when I get it......but dang. I want it now! LOL
