Roscoe Club

Does my old heart good to see service bands working, with all the closures lately

MWR related funds are the easiest to cut. With so few people having a legitimate connection to the military these days, its very popular to say, "Why are these Soldiers, Sailors, Coasties, Airmen, and Marines having fun wasting our money? Shouldn't they be focusing on their jobs and deploying?"

How cool would it be if a service member could book the service band for their wedding- free of charge as long as it's close to base and they're available? I've been through so many ceremonies where the 2d Marine Air Wing band, or whomever, played the typical marches, the Anthem and the Hymn. But I'm sure those folks would play weddings and other parties well!

While drinking my coffee this morning I decided to take a trip down Roscoe memory lane. That eventually took me to Rocket Musics Roscoe archive page. No other music store built as many nice Roscoes as @RocketMusic (Greg)! So many gorgeous basses! And I was amazed that almost all of them cost less than what folks are asking for used Roscoe's today!
Crazy! Around 166 Roscoe basses that Greg had built. And of course, there may have been more (that didn't get uploaded to the archive site).

I grew up in Warner Robins, like Joe, and it’s hard to put a dollar value on the impact of the AFRES band on our community.
When I was in high school band these guys came in and helped us prepare for competition. As I got older and gigged with some of them they set an example of how good musicians conducted themselves at a gig. (Well most of the time anyway)
Quite a few of the became music educators in our school system after retirement.
And man, we had the best 4th of July concerts anywhere! Fireworks, great music , cool flyovers and a lot of patriotic pride! One year they brought in a group of cannons from Ft Sill, OK.
The 1812 Overature with Fireworks, Cannons and a B1 Bomber flyover was AMAZING.
The band really blessed our community.

We still have the 4th of July concert and we bring in some big name country, R&B and rock artists but they can’t hold a candle to THE BAND OF THE AIR FORCE RESERVE!

The service bands are not MWR funded at all. Their job IS to play music - at home, for the public, and deployed. I know the fights they're fighting, probably better than most.

Not only is that illegal, it's entirely impractical, from an operational standpoint. Those folks *do* play parties (Dining Outs, Marine/Army/Air Force balls, etc). But the OpTempo of most active duty bands make the idea of being able to be hired out completely infeasible.

I think you've completely missed my point.

I know that they aren't funded by MWR. Military bands are seen as a novelty that are MWR related (MWR as a concept, not as an organization....) - it doesn't matter what bucket of money they come from, that one is going to get smaller. And I never said anything about hiring out. I pointed to an additional service they could provide in order to stay relevant.

A band complaining about OpsTempo needs to get a grip. They're wearing the uniform, they're getting paid, they pretty much only do their primary job, they're not ever deployed. That's as cushy as it gets. Meanwhile my squadron had 2 up airplanes of the 14 on the line, and were working 12 on 12 off 6 days a week to make the flying schedule work so we could make workups and the CertEx to go out the door for 7-10 months. Oh and we only had 11 of the 18 officers and pilots we were supposed to have (including the Skipper and XO), along with that came all of the jobs that had to be covered so everyone was double, if not triple, dipping.

Oh, but the band had to play a couple of change of command ceremonies, a Colonels retirement, and got a little busy during November Ball season. Give me a break.

I want to delete the previous post I made in response to this one. I was not being cool. I'm sorry. This isn't the place for the negativity I brought!

So close to knowing what you're talking about, yet so far.

This is a picture of a gig *restarted* because we'd been mortared during the first set.

Mostly playing the skinny six stringers these days but my wife caught me spending some quality time with my baby. Words can’t express how good this bass sounds and plays. Thanks Keith!

Great to see you posting Scott!
Keith easily makes the very best 6 string basses! Awesome feeling necks and great tone up and down the fingerboard.
That one is a beauty!
I almost gave up on my new 6 but Fritz talked me down from the roof!:roflmao:
Totally loving it now. Just needed a little time with it.

Looks normal to me.

Looks a lot like my Classic 4 “Pino” to me.

You are probably right. It seemed skinny to me near the Roscoe logo and skinny before the black started, but that's probably because I'm used to looking at the 5 headstock (or a F 4-string). Thanks for confirming!
