Roscoe Club

Hi everyone.

First of all for all of you who survived Helene and Milton over the last few weeks I've been praying for you and hoping that things didn't go completely pear-shaped for you. 😕 all the best my bass-playing people.

I'm thinking of possibly trading my LG Custom Roscoe for something similar but with a darker top wood. Here's a picture of the maple topped one I have, ash body, m/w/m, wenge board, Barts - don't know if they're custom or standard. 20240423_083830.jpg20240423_083808.jpg20240423_083722.jpg

If anyone might be interested throw some ideas my way, cash sale a possibility too.

Those are Bart CB pickups. That was my bass for a while, if I had the funds I would 100% buy it back.

Thanks for the info, it is a nice bass. Of course I have a soft spot for Roscoe as my first high end bass was a mid 90s LG2005 5str. Rare birds, about the same as a standard in features. I'll admit I'm driven by aesthetics, that's largely why I want to move it. Not necessarily holding for a Roscoe but it's what I prefer.

So I have a somewhat technical question for the Roscoe collective. I was told my LG has Bart CBs in it. Is that classic Bart? Custom Bart? Or something else? Also it has a Bart (I assume) 3 band pre with 3 position mid switch. What are the frequencies?
They are classic bass pickups, the mid frequencies I think are 250, 500, and 800 HZ.

This is probably more of a generic question than a Roscoe-specific issue, but what the heck...

I bought an SKB3005 unlined fretless with a Diamondwood fingerboard from another TB member. It plays like a dream, but the jack doesn't/didn't grip the cable firmly and causes really loud amp explosion sounds (fun....not), and the pots are all noisy/scratchy. I pulled the jack and bent the contacts in a bit and they grip well now, but still need to be cleaned...still a little grit sound it I move while playing. Haven't addressed the noisy pots.

It's a Bart setup w vol, blend, stacked treble/bass, and p/p midrange.

Sooo.. what's the best, safest way to remedy these issues?

Cheapest way is to spray the inside of the pots with DeoxIT electronics contact cleaner or something similar. The pots probably have some little spot that allows a small access to the wiper where you can aim the straw from the spray can. I’m sure there’s a YouTube video explaining how.
Guaranteed way is to replace all the pots with new sealed pots. More money, more time (removing and soldering), not necessarily necessary.
DeoxIT also comes in a wipe-on liquid you can use on the jack if needed, though you can prob get away with the spray.

I keep reading cautions/advice from VERY respected techs to use a specific version of Deox...but I can never remember which is which. Some can strip the inside of the pots of some kind of necessary lubricant or something like that....?

I don't know if there is a "best" Deoxit except everyone recommends fader lube for faders after deoxit. Couldn't hurt for pots too. I fix a lot of old audio equipment and found that WD40 contact cleaner works great and is half the cost for twice as much. Just make sure you get the contact cleaner and not the penetrating oil.

Something else to check Is your cable. If that is starting to get wonky it could cause that kind of noise when you move around. Swap out for a different cable and see if there are any changes.

You by chance aren’t using a right angle Jack (to plug into the bass) are you? I say that because most right angle jacks don’t go in far enough to fully seat (on a Roscoe). If this is the case, you can remove the output Jack, remove the spacer nut and reinstall the output Jack into the electro-socket. That allows the output Jack to extend further out (and the right angle plug engages properly).
If this isn’t the problem, just replace the output Jack with a True Tone Jack.

Good thoughts, but I'm using a straight plug. Bending the bangs on the jack for a tighter grip helped, but I should have cleaned the contact points when I had the jack pulled. It's crowded in there, and there's not much extra wire length going to the jack...could barely get the jack out far enough to address the issue. I traced the jack wires back to see if I could gain some slack by snipping some of the retaining zip ties, but didn't see any excess wire in that part of the harness. I have some electronic experience and have done extensive soldering work (building and repairing amps and preamps, mostly from kits), just not much with basses.

Thank you!

WD40 makes many products. Their electronics contact cleaner is what I use. But yes, definitely do not use their general lubricant.
