Roscoe Club

My LG3006 is currently wearing a steel Fodera Heavy B set (pre-DR) and it's a match made in heaven. Little did I know they would move all production to DR and now I can't find the previous sets anywhere. You'd think the suppliers would have a surplus. Maybe they already sold it off or perhaps DR insisted that all existing stock be removed from the internet. Either way, I just put the set on and they're just starting to break in so I'll have some time with them. I did order one of the new FoderaxDR sets and I'm looking forward to comparing them to the older ones. I do a lot of Brazilian jazz and theater work with this bass so I don't think I can go to flats on it anytime soon. I LOVE the TI flats on my Fenders though!

Yes, and you can buy them in bulk directly from Keith, typically at a nice discount. The Roscoe string set is the only one I've used on Roscoe basses.

Thanks a lot for posting a pic of the gauges (again?). I thought I had written them down but I hadn't and was trying to find the closest gauges in other D'Add lines and other makers to compare over the years.

Bass arrived safe & sound. Sweet piece of ash ... and 8lbs on the dot!

Very excited to plug it in, but it had to be shipped sans batteries, so a trip to Homer is in the offing. I can report that acoustically it is resonant and plays great, with a nice setup and action.

Fingers crossed that the electronics (minus a couple of known-dead LEDs) are all in equally top condition and functionality.

Got my second Roscoe (an LG-3005 Custom) here on TB classifieds in 2018. Although it was a real stunner (the cocobolo top and rosewood board were both incredible) and played and sounded as good as it looked, it was a bit over 10 pounds on the strap. Too heavy for 4+ hour nights, so I reluctantly sold it.
Focused on other things for a spell, but started looking again locally a couple years ago. I really needed to find one that came in right around 8 lbs ... and that takes some searching. Nothing came up within my budget or drive radius, but I kept looking.

I had saved this one on Reverb, even though it originally was listed at a price that was far too rich for my blood. When the seller dropped the price months later, I contacted them with an offer, but we couldn't meet to make it work. Another month or so went by and I tried again at the same price. This time they accepted, and I am thrilled.

Standard Plus featuring an ash body and birdseye maple fretboard w/ bone nut, Hipshot USA tuners and B bridge, Bart pickups and 3-band ... and LED markers. The last bit I could've lived without, but because a few of the markers are dead, I was able to get a nice discount. Anywho, the best news is the weight: 3.65kg ... which hits right at 8 lbs. Having owned two LG-3005 models in the past I already know I love the sound, look, feel, and build of these amazing instruments. Now I will be able to love the weight!

The hardest part will be waiting well over a week for it to arrive!😬

Very nice and congratulations! The LG is my favourite body shape though I don’t own one (I have and SKB and a Century). Since I do a lot of my playing at home sitting down I would have kept the cocobolo bass but I get why it would be not be ideal for gigging!

Funny moment with my new (to me) LG-3005:

I had to buy 9v batteries for it, as the bass shipped from Taipei and had to travel without any. After I put the two fresh ones in under the battery cover, I had a bit of a time figuring out how to turn the LED system on. I thought it had to be the mini-toggle, but nothing was happening. Did it need a cable plugged into the jack? Nope. Was it one of the push-pull pots instead? That made no sense, and I remembered it is Vol: active/passive, Mid: low/high Q. OK ... what am I missing? So I took the control cavity cover off and chased the wire, which lead to ... another 9v snap connector! Yeesh! I put one in and got everything tucked neatly into the *tight* space. When I flipped the toggle up, VIOLA! Bright blue LEDs ablazing! (well, most of them anyway, but I knew some were DOA before purchase). My first thought was, "this'll look great with my Genz-Benz Shuttle head!" 😜

Later in the evening, I got to thinking ... why is it a 3-position switch? I know that up is on, and middle is off, but what's the other position for? I figured if one had LED side-position markers (which this doesn't), that would be the way to have just the face or the side or both selected? I switched it into the down position, and nothing happened. Hmmm. Oh well, I'm not going to really use them anyway. Then I went to pick up the bass by the neck, and as I lowered it back into the stand, the lights illuminated near my hand as the neck slipped through. Whut tha ?!? ...🤯

Yep, come to find out it has a chase function that only lights up those LEDs in the immediate area where you are playing. OK. Now THAT is actually kinda cool. Totally useless from a functional standpoint, but what a killer trick to switch on during a bass break or solo on a dark stage!

Now I wish all the LEDs were live!

(BTW: the LG-3005 TOTALLY lived up to my memories of the two killer ones I owned previously! Tight, punchy, articulate, amazing B, and this one feels feather-light on the strap. I'm in love all over again ... Thanks Keith & co.!)

Glad it arrived safely and you’ve figured out all of the switches and controls. I guess the LEDs are installed in a non-serviceable manner. In electronics school I remember reading that the typical life cycle of an LED was 99 years. I guess that estimate was just promotional hype!

Yeah, I think we've all come to realize that the "LEDs are lifetime light!" is BS. From what I've found regarding these Sims markers, the fretboard has to be removed to access the LEDs from below.

As you probably know, the infant mortality rate of electronic components is much higher than long term. Most failures are found during a burn in period.

Indeed. I also wonder--given the filthy condition this bass was in upon arrival--if there wasn't some damage from sweat/beer/? saturation that may have caused failures in the various diodes ...

Needless to say, it got a full deep clean and decontamination last night. The fretboard and neck looked like it had never been cleaned. Yucko.
