Yo Gard -

Looking to add another Roscoe to the stable; it's beautiful (duh...) but I'm not fond of the hardware.
What would I have to do to get a set of black knobs? The usual 3 full-size and one stacker.
I'm guessing Hipshot Ultralight tuners are no less expensive through you than Hipshot direct - true ?

Yeah, our "sale price" for the Hipshot tuners is pretty much identical to theirs. On knobs, Hipshot has some they do:

Knobs > Store > Hipshot Products

If you don't dig those, we use these from AllParts, and just like the tuners, our price would be the same as theirs:

Short Black Dome Knobs | Allparts.com (that price is for a pair). They also have similar stacked knobs, which we don't use here in the shop, but I have retrofitted to my personal basses.

Hey Roscoers, I've got another question for you friendly folk. On the LG body style, one apparently can have pickups in 3 layouts - perpendicular, slanted, and reverse slanted. I'm curious to hear what people's experiences have been on what you prefer and why, do you notice much difference sonically, etc.

I had an SKB 6 with the "reverse" slant pups for a while. I thought it gave the B string a little more definition maybe - they are pretty well defined as it is - and maybe "softened" up the C string a bit. Never tried it on a 4 or 5.

Do you anchor on the pickups at all? Was it...I don't know...weird at all to use an angled pickup to anchor on?

LG with slanted pickups is just quintessential Roscoe. If it does anything to the tone I like it but, I think it is mainly looks.

Like I said, I'm no expert, but I think any effect may be limited to the C string on a 6. I'm thinking it has a lot to do with looks as well, although Gard may chime in with some expertise.

IIRC, the slant on the pickups of the LG were supposed to help fatten up the low end due to the smaller body (less wood) of the LG. I could be wrong, but that's how I remember it being explained.

I had "slanted" pick-ups put on my Walnut Century. To my ear - it does make the bottom end a little fuller, and aesthetically I like it (check out the avatar). Slants aren't only for LG's

Nope. The slanted pickups were Jimmy Haslip's idea. They were to tighten the B string, and warm up the C string. (Remember, Jimmy plays lefty and upside down) In my opinion, it really works.

+1 That's an effective way to tweak the voicing. I'd think full length bars rather than individual coils would be better for slant pickup mounting. Coils with individual pole pieces which require precise string placement and orientation to operate in their sweet spot probably wouldn't work as well for this. Nordstrand dual blade, Dingwall FD3, and Aguilar DCB seem like they'd be good candidates for slant mounting.

I honestly don't even notice the slanted p/u's on my LG. My thumb finds it's place and the playing begins. That said, I'm not one who requires instruments to have a particular feel. I guess I'm fortunate as I can strive for mediocrity with any instrument.

Actually, the term "quad coil" means that there are two split blades inside of the shell, so that there is a break in each of the two the rails within the shell. The Bartolini CB pickup does not have this break, and there are two rails inside of the shell. The only pickups we use with individual polepieces for each string are the Aguilar 4/5/6J-HC's, 4/5/6P-60, and AG-4/5M pickups.

Really? I thought the slant came before Jimmy, but the reverse slant came from Jimmy due to him playing with the strings inverted.
