Roscoe Club

The Plek does a lot more than "just" dress frets - we are presently using it to level and true the fingerboard as well as slot for frets, in addition to actually leveling and dressing the frets. Oh, and it rough carves and slots the nut too. If we wanted to add in doing inlay work, it will also do this. Very flexible, and impressive machine. I really dig working with it.

So Gard,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I can see how the "Plek" could be used on a bare fingerboard (new or a fretless), and on a fretted neck. But how about on an existing lined fretless board (seems like I remember you guys use aluminum wire for the lines). Is that doable?
:)

Ok guys. I'm back for a beating but I know you all will guide me with no sugar coating. My old 6 is for sale. You all know my history with this bass and 6 strings in general. I am torn. I can "afford" it, and the price is right/fair. I have moved this twice in the past. I could go re-read the old threads I suppose. Not sure how much I'd use the C string on a regular basis at church, but I've never kept it long enough to really know I guess. I am not usually "emotionally attached" to a bass as shown by the way I (used to) buy and sell, but this one seems to have an attachment. First Roscoe, picked it up at the shop, lesson with Jimmy, all special and "once in a lifetime" type things for me. Robin says I won't have to sleep on the couch, but if I get it it NEVER leaves again.

My GAS has settled a lot over the last few years. I am very happy with my CS+ 5 Koa so it's not really a "quest for the perfect bass" as it is securing some nostalgia.

So, I'm torn and am wondering if anyone has anything new to say given I've covered this ground before.

Thanks for indulging and the endless patience.

Steve,
Your admiration of Roscoes helped me find the magic of Roscoes and I thank you!

That said, the reasons you moved this one and the other fine Roscoes you have had are probably still valid.... You have found your "one" already.
Will this 6 ultimately get the playing time that warrants the purchase cost? Only you can answer that!

GAS is tough!

This matters because ... ?

I almost never use the C string on my 6. Yet. Does it make me think I did the wrong thing and should move back to 5? Never once. You will grow into it. It's there when you want it. I play mine every day and it puts a smile on my face every time. And I don't have reasons for emotional attachment like you do....

That is kind of my thinking right now. The 6 would be something to try and push myself when I have time. I occasionally play "traditional" jazz gigs where I am expected/allowed to solo and the added range of the 6 would be put to use there for sure.

And yes, I don't always use my B string just because it's there.

Good things to ponder.

I found that old pic making space on my phone so I thought I'd put it to use. ;-)

True. I love my current bass and it "plays itself" I'm so comfortable on it.

Sorry for the slight thread tangent. I'm going to skip the 6 and stay with my 5. As JLY said, the reasons/issues probably haven't changed. I got a little nostalgic and excited - like the last time this popped up - but I think in the long run I'm better off loving the bass I have and to just keep building my relationship with it. Four years and going strong.

Steve, everyone needs to be responsible. We all have to be adults (even when it's no fun). From what you've said it sounds like you've got a grip on these realities.

I don't know WHY you play bass but I suspect one of the reasons is that you love music (that's one of the reasons I play). However, the biggest reason I play is simply that it makes me smile. I'm the first to admit that I'm NOT a great player. I often say others (i.e. JOME) "play bass", I only "play with a bass". The Praise Team at church, with the family at home, with a volunteer group that plays at assisted care facilities, and an occasional jam session with the local "crew" are my gigs.

I said all that to make the point that I'm not a professional. No way do I see a studio in my future. I don't NEED three Roscoe basses. No way could I even rationalize anything close to that. I could get by just fine with a Squier five (I've played them before). But, if I did Play a Squier I can guarantee you wouldn't see that goofy grin on my face. My two Century fives (fretted and fretless) are TOP SHELF and never fail to please.

My fretless Century six doesn't get near enough playing time. But I don't care. It makes me smile. It allows me to stretch my playing. When I do play it, the 'C' string only gets used for some lite chords. But I don't care. It makes me smile. I have no delusions about being able to play it to it's full capability (ever). But I don't care. It makes me smile.

You note a pattern here? I don't care. It makes me smile.

I think some of the guys I play with (from observing their trading patterns) try to rationalize and justify having a Roscoe instead on a less expensive bass. When they can't justify it with logic, they feel guilty and start another trading cycle. I've watched it many times. Me personally, I don't care. It makes me smile. Some feel guilty because they have more than one fretted, or they have more than one fretless so here goes another trading cycle.

Do I feel a little guilty for having two Signatures and one Custom. NO. I don't care. It makes me smile.

Be responsible. Be an adult. But everyone needs something that just makes them happy.

So.......... Me personally, I don't care. It makes me smile.

How about you ???

Nothing to feel guilty about. I've taken shots for years. I used to have some "tendencies" but I've gotten better.

I would like to have that 6 back but at this point my 5 is doing everything I need and more and it does it really well. I've wanted to blow some money on my car for a while so...new Magnaflow street axle backs. They look and sound great.
