Roscoe Club

I would love to see the new shop. Picked up my first Roscoe in the "original" shop so it's be really fun to see the new place. But I'd probably have to buy another bass.

The new shop is huge, Keith gave me a tour when I got PLEK'd. As we walked through the building Keith was sharing a little on what he wants to do with the space. I think when finished it will have a real wow factor, especially the Artist area where you can try out the guitars and basses.

Speaking of PLEK, if you haven't had your Roscoe PLED'd I would seriously suggest coming in early to the GTG when announced and having your bass checked. My LG was way out and didn't feel as good as my SKB (which is dead on) but after Keith ran it through and dressed the frets, the LG is just amazing. One of the local bassist called me and asked what I thought of PLEKing (not knowing I had mine done), I told him I had it done and his next question was, was it worth the cost? My response was, absolutely! He had both his 5 and 6 string done and he called me back and said, I didn't think my Roscoe's could play any better than they already did but man Clint, you were right, they play amazing.

Keith is definitely pushing the envelope with manufacturing processes and build quality which I am sure has some of the other builders grimacing. I am surprised a particular builder hasn't called the shop and cussed someone out yet. :D

Word!
If I did that, my wife would become my former wife.

Mrs. Crash told me once we finishing paying off the loan we had to take out to buy or company I have my choice of either a new Roscoe bass or a used Porsche 996 turbo. Decisions, decisions.

I'm sorry, but why would anyone want a three-string bass?

Because two strings are not enough.

Strings?, I don't need no stinkin strings!

Forgive me Fellow Roscoers' and BassWorld, but are these pickups humbucking?, single coil? Dual ??

I don't feel like finding the info letter ha..

and I am just an curious about hum-canceling pickups in my Roscoe.. Unless they already are..

Thanks..

***Edit** - Also I'm probably taking my Roscoe to New York soon.. should I get it Plek'd in NY or wait to see Keith... etc..

I thought about sending mine to be Plek'd based on all the good things I hear. I'd have to time it right though as I play most Sundays and need my bass. I suppose I could suffer for a Sunday or two if I needed to. What does it cost to PLek a 5 string? Or does string number matter?

Humbuckers. We almost NEVER use true single coil pickups, unless they are very specifically requested by a customer.

Also, I bet our cost for Plek ($150 for Roscoe instruments, $225 for non-Roscoe) will be better than you will get in NY, not to mention we built your bass - who better to make it go from great to greater?

As stated above, $150 for Roscoe/$225 for non-Roscoe. Turnaround time is pretty quick, typically we can get it one day and ship it the next. If you're serious, give me a shout at the shop and we'll sort it out.

sorry for the long post guys.. but

I might seriously consider that.. I'm actually even more inclined because I want you guys to look at a (dead) spot (C and C#note) on my bass anyway and who knows.. maybe it will solve that getting it plek'd ha..

But really, If I would do that I just throw the bass in a soft-shell bass case and then in a jam packed full of puffy things (white popcorn) surrounding the bass and ship it to you?

I'm not sure the best way to ship it to you guys..

I'm sure this isn't the best way to determine if something is wrong but near the end of the short video I pluck the upper string towards the Nut and show you the pitches changing except when I get to a specific one.. oddly enough the note that I feel is "dead"... hmm..

so is the fret too high?

Go to 0:14 seconds to see the fret buzz..

Second, have you guys planned or had a Roscoe GTG? I saw some chatter about it, but again, I bet I missed a ton. Joe, what if it's there in Georgia - could I invite myself over to stay at your house? ;)[/QUOTE]

Absolutely! We'll be having one in a month or two ...... I'll keep everyone posted!

Shipping: NO PACKING PEANUTS!!!! :banghead: :spit:

Seriously, please don't. Please. They are the bane of my existence. I despise them with a white-hot hatred that burns hotter than the core of the sun. They are of the devil, and are evil incarnate.

(I think I made my point. ;) )

Really, please use bubble wrap, it works as well if not better, if used correctly, and won't make me empty your box out in our dumpster (really, I open your box, see packing peanuts, close the box, walk to the parking lot, open the box, then pour it out in the dumpster and extract the case or gigbag - not kidding. I HATE packing peanuts.). Also, please don't "overpack", or as we call it "Dan Erlewine Packaging 101". Don't detune your strings (for ghawd's sake, DON'T - I could write a novella on why not, but won't here), don't put packing materials inside your case or gigbag (unless you have an ill-fitting case and the instrument slides around significantly - then, just put in enough to arrest movement and STOP), just make sure that the bass is tuned to pitch, securely in a case or gigbag, use a good quality (as new as possible) heavy cardboard box, make sure there is bubblewrap around all of the sides of the case or gigbag, and move on. Please. :)

Aside: the slacking the strings thing, never got it. "They" say you are supposed to do that. Who are "they" (and Dan Erlewine doing his imitation of Dan Ackroyd imitating Julia Child is not a good enough "they" ;) )? Here's a hint - I worked for 5 years at Bass Central, and in that time I received (unpacked & QC'd) literally thousands of brand-new instruments from dozens of custom high-end boutique bass builders. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. WAS. TUNED. TO. STANDARD. PITCH. when it arrived. Every one. If it's good enough for the guys that build 'em, let's go with that version of "they", hmmkay? ;) There is a reason why, for the record, and the tl/dr version is this - a proper neck setup is a balance between the string tension and the trussrod tension, and slacking the strings, without taking all of the tension off the trussrod will potentially force a back bow into your neck, not to mention completely foul up the nice setup on the bass that the build did just before shipping the bass - whether you loosen the trussrod or not. :)

Next, to your issue with the rattle...well, do you hear it when you're PLAYING, or just behind the fretted note? If you just hear it behind the note, as in your example, then it is a non-issue. That said, giving it a run through the Plek will absolutely improve the clarity and playability of the bass (no guarantees about those notes behind the notes thing....but if it is a high fret, Pleking it will eliminate that.).

This should be made a sticky in the sales forum!

Haha, I sent my sister a Pandora Bracelet for her birthday this year and packed it in a 24" x 24" x 24" box full of those peanuts I had collected from other shipments. I told my brother what I was soing so he bought her a couple charms and packed them the same way. I imagine in October I will receive a mysterious large box for my birthday.

That's funny Gard,

But brace yourself! as when I shipped my upright bass (yes a 3/4 upright bass) to Dubai one time, they put it in a big cardboard box with all those beautiful loving but DEADLY packing peanuts!!

I now will find the picture to give you nightmares..

I kinda knew about the don't detune the strings thing.. Because of going through so many setups.. But it should be more mentioned to all bass players in general when any bass is bought..

By the way, I wonder if carbon fiber necks are suspect to bowing.. Cause even if they bend, I guess it will never actually warp into the back bow etc.. right?

Anyway, at some point I'll make a flight out to you guys and just bring my bass..

(If you haven't seen my other posts about going to New York recently...) I plan on taking my bass to New York and that's why I was wondering if I should get it plek'd there as I imagine there must be someone good in NY doing it..

Otherwise I'll just wait till I travel closer to Roscoe HeavensGate..

As far the video, - The fret on the other side of the string video is just only to show that there must be something going on as do all your other Roscoe or any basses for that matter, buzz like that also on one fret going up? I imagine not, so surely this means there is a stray fret right?

I'm sure that's not the official test- but coupled with the (only on G/string!) C and C# notes seem to not vibrate along the body as well as all the other notes on the entire neck.. (Dead spot maybe?) I can feel it compared to the other notes anywhere else on the neck..

Remember, if this even means anything, I'm a double bass player so I'm used to vibration from the body of instruments..

**Oh I found one of the boxes that had peanuts!!

But wait till I find the real 3/4 box picture in Dubai!

Ok, my prediction for the Cowboys 2016 season. Game 1, First Quarter, Tony Romo breaks his collar bone and is out for 14 games,. Dak Prescott takes Dallas to 14-2 record, Romo comes back for the play-offs, chokes as usual and we loose in the first round again. Tony Romo is the DEVIL!

My prediction for the Chargers - they continue to try to blackmail the San Diego voters into buying a stadium for them, while still looking for other cities where they can relocate.

On the game front, they win two games against bad teams by a field goal each and lose the rest - and will still wonder why they don't get a lot of support!

My brother-in-law and my mom did a series of gag gift exchanges with three red christmas tree balls. One year he taped then to the inside of the the top of a shipping box that *looked* like it had a short top for a box that was 4 feet tall - what it actually had was a bottom section about 6 inches high and the rest of the box lifted with the top. And he filled it with stytrofoam peanuts (or, as I prefer to call them, "ghost poop!"). Anyway - 16 cubic feet of peanuts were spread all over the living room floor! It took a while to get started on cleaning them up as we were laughing too hard to move.

I'd rather use bubble wrap.
