Roscoe Club

Everyone should check out what was posted on roscoe's Facebook page today. Just when I thought I may have bought my last bass...

It's very cool.

...what, this old thing:

...s'ok...

:ninja:

(For the record: this is a "prototype of a prototype", a "proof of concept mule", not a final product. That said, on first blush, it works pretty darn well, and with a few modifications to the shape, and of course a LOT more attention to detail in the woodworking [this was a failed neck with the headstock cut off, a body that didn't pass inspection bandsawed to the approximate shape, and a pickup that was cosmetically damaged wired directly to an output jack without even a volume control], this is very close to what the finished version will look like :) )

….
I compared it to my Talkbass aquired Century

Bubinga/ash body. Ebony/maple neck. Roscoe Barts/Demeter pre.
….

:hyper: That's a very familiar Roscoe ;)!

For me, the primary concern is size. This bass needs to fit in some very tight places that passengers normally don't ever see. Small size and weight make it much easier for me to clip it on my suitcase and do the bag drag from Concourse A all the way to Concourse F in ATL. Plus, there are hotel van considerations, x-ray machines, deadheads and just maneuvering through the airport crowds. The smaller the better but, I want some more style and playability than a Steinberger.

With very mixed feelings I humbly apply for emeritus status. Yesterday I shipped this beauty to Long Island. One of those deals where you have to give up something awesome to get something awesome.

She served me well for 7 years, but my need for fretless has dropped off dramatically. Pretty much church only. And I've turned over most of my choir's bass action to the guy holding the black P-Bass

Wow, I didn't know there was a fretless twin sister of my LG. If you search on "Inferno" on the forum, you will see what I mean. :eyebrow:

fugly. but I'm not into headless in general

It will get much more refined on the production version, as mentioned this is totally a prototype of a prototype. And, the whole point of it isn't really so much aesthetic, but functional for guys that travel a lot and want to have something that plays and sounds like a Roscoe without the limitations of size issues becoming a problem - i.e. guys like Joel that are constantly on airplanes and want to bring a bass along.

I'd probably want a longer top horn on the headless to keep it from feeling like such a long reach. I'd probably want a thicker lower bout, too.

That is exactly what we came to for the final shape, the upper horn will be approximately 1" longer, the back of the body will extend to cover the tuners on either side as well as be "under" them with a "scoop" to allow clean access to the tuners. We're still thinking about how the lower bout will end up, definitely more "sculpted", and probably about the same position (it actually works quite well seated with the shape it has). The primary desire is to keep the size as compact as possible, but still functional - it is intended for travel, but we want it to be a fully functional ROSCOE bass at the same time.

Roscoehead emeritus status: Approved.

Let me know when you're ready for a fretted replacement! ;)
