Dump that preamp. I really don't like the sound of Aggie pres, and my experience with them is similar to yours. My JJ Roscoe has the same pickups and the Bart pre, and it's perfect in every way.
I've been happy with the Roscoe stock Barts in mine. I've always preferred Barts over Aguilar anyway. Haven't tried teh others. I don't want to get started "modding" my Roscoes. I like 'em "stock" and factory spec.
I think I'll live with the OBP-3 for now but may consider installing the Bartolini preamp. What is the model of the Bartolini? Is this the standard preamp that Roscoe installs? I know the OBP-3 was the original preamp but it had Bartolini pups, which I have. There are so many combinations that it can make your head spin.

The technical term for this combination induced vertigo is "option anxiety" - and it's pretty real.
As for the Bartolini preamp we use, it is the NTMB-F.
were you on a ship or a boat? the 626 and 635 are still here, but they aren't "USS" anymore...they're these awful looking things with the missile compartments cut out...it's a shame
I was on the USS Sandlance SSN 660 and USS Orion AS 18. The first was a sub and the 2nd was a sub tender (Surface ship). I was there from late 1977 to around June of 1980. I have some pretty good memories from those days but they didn't seem so good at the time. I should really try to get back to Charleston some time.
familiar with the sandlance...my first boat was the trepang, out of Groton...674, sturgeon class...i have a picture of the sturgeon popping out of the ice on my wall right now...I got my chief's anchors in front of the 637 sail at keyport in bangor, wa...i was waiting on the missile technician pipeline to clear out and was a machinist's mate at the time...worked in her torpedo division, but that was the best boat I've ever been on, had a blast...we're down to two sub tenders now, the cable and the land...canopus was decomming when I came in, proteus may have still been around, I can't remember...

Same body wood options as the Jazz, distressed and non-distressed finishes, pickup options, shape of the neck, etc? Please spill ...Yes.

I was probably the civilian nuke Electrician. I worked for three years at Newport News Shipbuilding. I installed and calibrated the NI Cabs and sub systems on both carriers and boats and went on a few shakedown cruises. I don't know how many times I had to go behind you Navy techs to resolder those darn 30 pin amphenol connectors in the bottom of the cabinets, lol.
Now back to the Aggie OBP-3, they SUCK, the absolute worse sounding preamp in my experience. The preamp is only good for pee aiming practice after drinking a case of beer! The Nordstand pickups you have are really nice pickups but they don't pair well with the Aggie OBP-3 but again I don't think anythings sounds good with the Aggie preamp. Keep reading and you will eventually see my post with the different preamps and pickups I tried in a Roscoe Century JJ. What I found is my Century JJ always sounded kind of boomy with any combination I tried but I believe the last combination I had in the bass was the Delano JC5 HE 5 Pickups and the John East U-Retro Preamp. I had the Nordstrands and the U-Retro but a friend had a set of the Delano JC5 HE pickups and I thought those sounded better than the Nordstrands in that bass. (Ash body, Maple top, Purpleheart fingerboard, Maple/Purpleheart/Maple neck.
My Roscoe collection comprises of 3 Roscoe basses at the moment, I want a Classic P. I have my SKB which is stock from Roscoe, Roscoe Bart pickups with the Bart preamp. My LG has the Aguilar DB D4 pickups with a John East Uni-Pre and I have my Classic Custom with John East J-Tone preamp and Honey Badger split coil pickups. Out of the 3 basses the Classic gets the most compliments on tone.
OK, pretty much all that - the default/standard body wood will be poplar, options for alder or swamp ash. The default/standard pickup/electronics arrangement will be a single P with volume & tone controls, options for the same active/passive electronics, and for the same 2 pickup configurations as the J - i.e. JJ, PJ, JM, PM. The 4 string neck is a full-on "P" shape and dimensions, with the 1.75" nut, the 5 string will be the same 35" neck as the J - we saw no advantage to a different neck for the 5. All of the same finish options for color and distress level are identical.
Base pricing will be about $50-75 less for the single pickup passive version, still nailing that down while completing the two prototypes (4 and 5 string
)
Oddly, I love it - IN THE RIGHT SITUATION.
It's what I have in my fretted Century Standard 5M (with the Aggie AG-5M pickup), and I love how it works with that bass. Just the right amount of slice & dice for a good grindy rock pick tone or a punch 'em in the face slap tone.
