I saw it. Amazing looking bass and would certainly give me a good P sound. Just not sure I can afford it. Surprised it's still around actually.

I'm hoping that maybe new pickups in my G&L JB-2 will scratch my itch. It's a nice little bass and has a really fast neck, and was a gift from my wife so I'd like to use it once in a while, like jazz quartet gigs, jams, things like that.
And for the price...what a deal for what seems to be an as new Roscoe classic jazz 4.

My mind isn't set. I waffle all the time. I got an email form a friend who builds and does that mod to all his basses and loves it. I also hear from many people to leave well enough alone as I love this bass as is. It takes me weeks or months to debate myself in or out of a purchase.

Well, if that's the case, then I vote you get the like new Roscoe 4'er. It's only twice the cost of the mods, but it gives you more options. And it's what you want, which should trump all reasons.
Sometimes I tinker with my SKB 3005 to get different tones to fit original recordings, but mostly just find the best tone for the venue. Still, $700 is cheaper then a buying a cheap bass which will feel inferior to a Roscoe. Sorry, not much help.
FWIW, a year ago I bought 3 PUPs to put into my Dingwall SJ5XXX (it has neo's, I bought alnico's) and 2 are still sitting (1 made its way into the bridge position of my SPJ5). Usually the want is stronger than the need.

700 wow. For that coin you can have your choice of some really nice used P style axes from Fender to Lakland.
+1. And if he doesn't like them they can be flipped at little or no loss. However, if he doesn't like the electronics mod he will be out a fair bit of coin.
It's really hard to ignore a $1,500 Roscoe classic jazz 4. And a Pacman noted, it's routed for JJ or PJ from the factory. Just need a different pickguard and P pup and bam...P/J...Or I'd just leave it after I fell in love with the jazz sound again as that was my go to sound for years before I went Modulus and then Roscoe.
If I didn't like the Roscoe Classic neck I could probably flip that bass for no loss as well as it's such a great price.
I texted a pic to my wife. Said it's hard to not buy a $1,500 Roscoe weather you need it or not. She said it "looks nice" and I need a birthday and fathers day gift...
I'd never have her buy it as if I sell it that would be bad, but almost a passive "ok" from her. Have to feel things out a bit. She bought me my G&L JB-2 that I have used with flats for "more "traditional" jazz and pit gigs. It's a nice bass and would be better with new pickups. So I already have a "jazz" bass in the house.
The only other issue (in my mind) is that I have been playing 5 strings for a while. There are about 4 songs right now in the cover band that really need a B string - Uptown Funk for example - and I hate changing basses mid set...especially between a passive and active. Hate to mess up the mix.

I don't see what the problem is @SteveC ...If I had been on here for a couple months wanting another bass and upon finding exactly what I was looking for, and the wife put her stamp of approval on it, I would be posting a NBD thread on here lol. I feel like your overthinking the process entirely to much.
I do tend to do that. I have to make sure I'd be OK with a 4 string. I've thought about going back to a passive 4 string for a few reasons for a while. I suppose it wouldn't be that big a deal to swap basses, set the output on the active bass to match best I can, use it for the 3-4 songs I need it and use the jazz for the rest.
I'll quit posting and clogging up the thread and try to decide what to do.

(For the record, my two cents...don't mess with the Roscoe you have that you really like. You have a passive 4-string J in the G&L. You really wanna P? Get a used P or PJ for a price you can afford and be done with it OR keep rolling with the nice kit you already have at your disposal and put this out of your mind.)
