Roscoe Club

+2 on the D'Addarios. I've tried just about every big name string out there and I keep coming back to the stock ones. I think it is mostly the feel to me. The tension is right there in that ever elusive Goldilocks zone.

However, I'm probably going to put some of those DR neon orange strings on my new orange headless. I just think it will look too cool not to.

Approved.

So when's the next Roscoe GTG so I can come mess around on all your basses :p?

Gards been talking about having one in Greensboro in the spring. Hopefully that will happen. If not, you're more than welcome to come join us in Georgia next Sept-Oct. We also may have a mini-GTG in the next few weeks in LilRay ever makes it back to GA.

Be careful. I went to a GTG in Greensboro to pick up a new 6 string.

While touring the shop, I saw a beautiful top, reserved it, and a few months later ordered a new 5 string.

I have the 5 up for sale to reduce debt, but yesterday I found my 6 string (that I probably sold prematurely) for sale and am debating buying it back.

G.A.S. is bad enough, but when you get a Roscoe, it goes to a different level. I keep telling myself I can play "any old bass" and get buy just fine. This is true, but I am so spoiled by Roscoe basses, I don't know if I have the willpower to give them up. Add to the mix that the people at Roscoe are the BEST in the business and it's tough to go anywhere else. I know I post this a lot, but as much as their basses, this sets them apart. They have a great product, great service and treat EVERY CUSTOMER like an endorser.

I've been lurking around here the last several days. I have my mind set on picking up my first Roscoe. A four string should fit well with the current projects I have right now. I've got a Curbow 5er now that isn't getting any love.
As mentioned, there are some great deals on used 5 and 6ers, but not many 4s around right now. I'm keeping my eyes open though.

I know. There is no figuring me out, Ken. I can talk myself in and out of stuff and use circular logic until the end of time.

Maybe it's meant to be. No one wants to buy the Roscoe I have - my 2nd custom order - and my first custom ordered Roscoe just appears for sale in a random search while killing time one day. Maybe having 2 custom Roscoe basses is my destiny. :help::help:

Lately, when I get like this I just look at my debt and it gets me thinking more clearly. Unfortunately, while they are just "tools" these do have a certain "sentimental" value to them.

The only reason I comment is that it seems that you are a great guy. I just know so many players who get themselves into trouble by not taking care of their financial business. Lately, I've been serving as a bit of an old 'Den Mother' to some of the guys who are in serious trouble at the moment. The gigs are drying up, health insurance is expensive, and they are getting to the age where it is hard to recover. So, I am VERY sensitive to guys having too much debt, etc.

Sorry, don't mean to be judgemental. You have a simply stunning bass for sale right now. There is no reason that you can't play that for a year, get to really know it, and decide if you want to keep playing, or chuck it, or just relax and play a little bit in church to keep you fingers in it.

Going into more debt for a 6 string makes no sense to me.

Ken, I wouldn't post if I wasn't able to "take it" as it were. I teach, have insurance as does my wife. We make it fine, it's just that like many people,we have some debt we'd like to reduce. I don't gig much at all. It's church, fill in and just playing for my enjoyment.

I have been interested in trying to learn that Todd Johnson "chordal approach" lately. Something for me to "chew" on. I have been having trouble deciding what to do about playing/music lately. I teach orchestra by day, so music is a big part of my life.

The 6 string purchase wouldn't add to debt, it would just reduce funds I have saved to reduce debt. I know, smoke and mirrors. It's really more of an emotional thing than logical. Beautiful bass that was made specifically for me.

For what it's worth…I'm sticking with my Koa and not buying back my old 6. Gotta be practical.

Before Roscoe I played 17.5 and always thought it was too tight. So, ten years later I got a 19 and it felt too wide. I have owned three Roscoes and my fourth is being built. 18.3 seems to be my Goldilocks Zone.

I believe Keith has a custom set of D'ads that he uses on all new 5, 6 and (occasionally) 7 string basses wight a gauge of .128.

I have since used the regular D'ad EXL 170 SL and the B string is .130.

Spacing wise, the 18.3 MM works for me. My Modulus basses are 17 something and swapping back between the two brands and sizes is a non-factor (to me anyway).

I was playing a G&L before Roscoe. I greatly prefer the standard roscoe 5 string spacing and it did not take any time to adapt to.

I use either a .120 or .125 B string depending on the type of string, usually mated to a .040-.100 or .040-.095 G through E

I use DR Hi Beams 45 - 125.

.125 hi beam. The stiffness of the neck and pickup placement eliminates the need for a huge B string, wonderful.

I came from 19mm land, so the Roscoe neck feels like a toothpick!

Another +1 on the .125 B string ....

I'm one of the few that still uses the stock Roscoe D'Addario strings. I've tried everything out there but in the end I always end up going back to the D'Addario XL's. Love the midrange tone they bring and the feel of the string. Hard to beat the price too!:)

thanks for all the responses guys. been curious how i'll adjust to my new Roscoe once it's finished as all the other 5'ers i've had have been narrow spacing. the spacing by the bridge/pickups isnt so much of a concern as how much wider the neck is above the fifth fret. just wondering if it takes some extra stretching or the added width is negligible. as for strings, i already plan to stick with D'addarios, i got a few of the light balanced tension 5-string sets that jason at BSO put together. they're 40-95 with a 130 B. i've got the set on my current 5'er and like the feel for the most part, but the B is just a tad too big. i think dropping down to a 125 might be the ticket for me. apologies for the long-winded and probably incoherent post.

I'm going to say this one time, and I hope you don't take offense. I truly am offering this in an effort to help.

The reason you're searching - through instruments, approaches, techniques - is because you haven't clearly identified that sound in your head. You can't get the music that's in you out if you don't know what that is. So stop, breathe, and listen inward until that sound is clear. *Then* you'll know where to go.

Thanks Jon. You're right. I don't know any more. I used to think I knew, but I was gigging and had a "role" in the band and a certain tone I was "known" for - basically a modern, active Bartolini sound. These days I'm not sure what's "inside me" musically. I know there's something. I may be overthinking it as well. That's nothing new. Thanks for caring enough to try and give me advice. Lots of great people around here.

The sound? - Hoppah!

:D

To quote Larry Bird, "It ain't bragging if you can back it up.."

Steve, all your recent basses that I've seen on TB are fantastic and capable of getting multiple tones, sounds and feels between your fingers, the amp and strings. Re-visit the Century bass you are selling, I am sure that bass can take care of 99% of all gigs that come your way. Jon is on to something...., sometimes you have to step back and re-evaluate, let the dust settle before you make a move.

My 2 cents of advice and I hope it comes across as friendly feedback. Apologies otherwise.
