Roscoe Club

Guys I have been offered a endorsement through Devon basses and he’s making me a Blue Quilt bass to my specs. So in a few months I will have my like new 2019 SKB Exhibition Roscoe for sale. It was a $5400 build with the top being a $1000 upcharge and $200 set of D-Cline designs knobs. I will be taking a big loss if anyone is interested. Could do a layaway play with some down and pay as you want. Message me for details. Will sale shipped with everything for $3900. Congrats on the endorsement.
That’s a beautiful Roscoe and if it were a Century....maybe. Will all your Roscoe’s be up for sale? I can’t remember where you’re at these days.

Also, some sunny day pictures...

Beautiful Fred!
How's she sound and play?
I have it set up pretty well, although it has that tight truss rod opening, so I haven’t quite got it dialed in. My brother has access to a grinder at work, when I see him I’m going to get a few 9/64” hex wrenches ground down for it.

The sound is good- not as “growly” as my SKB with the wenge ‘board, but the body shape works better for me. The Century neck does seem thicker though- the nut width is close (1.81” vs 1.83”), and the 24th fret is the same width. I haven’t measured the front to back depth pf the necks yet, but it is interesting. The Century neck isn’t unplayable, by any means, but the SKB neck reminds me of my ‘74 Fender Jazz... maybe I should just swap them ;)

My main bass is my Roscoe Century 5. I LOVE the neck. I love the headstock shape and “3 over 2” layout for tuners.
I sometimes want a P with flats sound. I am used to and use my B string quite a bit - for low notes and playing up the neck.
I don’t care for the “4 over 1” headstock that they use on the classics. I know lots of makers do, I just don’t care for it. The only bass I know off that would fit my “requirements” is a Lakland 55-64. They are no longer made so used is my only option there. I’m fine buying used.

Also, I know John Mayer is taking heat for a “Fender” body and a “PRS” neck/headstock but...Maybe a Roscoe P5 with a “classic” body and a standard neck/headstock?? Or maybe a Century Standard body/neck but instead of the usual electronics, just a passive P pickup with V/T controls?

Thoughts?

The SteveC signature model? Trying to compete with Shane’s endorsements deal? ;)

Two other quirks with this Century, it has short posts on the Hipshot tuners- never seen those before.

Don't know why that wouldn't work Steve. But maybe going with a STD with just the P-Bass pickup would look really cool. Then you can keep your favored Century body style and get it in a P-Bass.

I had one Roscoe with the shorter Hipshot tuner shafts. At first I thought it was cool but then, as your pic shows, you get three windings and that's all (of course that is enough).

Not seen the battery compartment go through to the top wood before (on a Roscoe). Maybe it's a thicker top.

My fretted LG has the short post Hipshots- while I have zero issues with it maintaining tuning, I think I'd prefer the fullsize Gotoh's that are on my fretless.

I haven't looked at the battery compartment yet, but I suppose that to get two batteries stacked, even on my old LG fretless (which I just had modified) it probably goes all the way through to the top wood.

Is that a bad thing? I don't know, if the topwood is think enough, it doesn't matter to me.

Oh, no. I’m not important enough to have an endorsement or a signature model. I am a vocal advocate though. Same with Genzler. I love the Century body and the traditional Roscoe headstock so a Century 5 with a P pickup (shouldn’t be tough as they do P/J Century 5’s) and a simple 2 knob volume/tone with a side input wouldn’t really be that big of a request. Not sure if it would “catch on” as I’m sure most who want a 5 string P would just get the classic version and deal with the 4 over 1 tuners. I’m sure I could as well, but when I think classic P I think 4 string. It’s just a “Steve” thing. I’m weird that way.

The SteveC model:
It would be a Century STD model with a snap in pick guard with Bart soap bars and another snap in pick guard with a P-bass pickup in the sweet spot. And maybe a built in quick connect mute for the P-bass configuration.

The only thing is, with just a P pickup (in the sweet spot) and a couple knobs (no pickguard) it might look odd as there would be a lot of empty real-estate with a bigger body like the Century. Maybe a “reduced size” Century body. Just hit reduce 30% or something (like on a copy machine) on the CNC router when cutting the body.
Hmm, now that could be something.

I don't have a photo handy but I'm fairly certain there is at least one Century (custom model) out there with just a P pickup and passive harness. Looks fine.

Also, keep in mind that even though the Century is the largest Roscoe body it's far smaller than a Fender P. It will look fine and I think a passive P only Century Std would be killer. I say keep the Roscoe 2+2 headstock but no reason you can't get the body done in solid Fiesta Red :)

Maybe someone will post a picture.

That is true. And I want to keep that balance with the longer top horn at the 12th fret.

Fiesta red with a rosewood board - just like Pino.

So, Shane. . Do tell about your endorsement deal with Devon. . How, where, and when will you be featured? Also, it's not listed in your user profile yet?

I asked Mr. KBRoscoe about neck and body swap possibilities once. . He said that swapping is typically infeasible, as necks and bodies of same models rarely interchange, and necks and bodies of different models are, as a rule, incompatible.

Since the Sadowsky Modern was mentioned I thought I'd weigh in on that. Generally speaking, loaded with Roscoe Barts and Bart Pre, a Roscoe sounds nothing like the Sadowsky Modern to me. Sure, similar pickup placement closer to the bridge, but the electronics definitely place them in very different worlds with the Roscoe having an expected darker, more compressed tone and the Sadowsky Modern having a more open, brighter tone.
Here's a Roscoe variation on a theme, chock full of Roscoe tone, supplemented by as much bright, open tone that you would likely ever need.

Maple/wenge/maple neck: 7-piece including stringers. Diamondwood hand-carved nut, swamp ash with exhibition Pomele Sapele top, standard 3-band Bart pre, 3-way toggle for bridge pickup allows 2 single-coil options and both combined.

"Overall conclusion: This pickup configuration is set up for growl. I call the toggle my "Gnarowly switch." Back bridge pup = Gnarly. Front bridge pup = Growly. Both bridge pups = Gnar-owly."
