Just took a nice trip down memory lane, found a track I recorded with the Roscoe Century Signature 6 I had built years back. Inspired by Gards Bubinga bass, this bass was Bubinga/Ash, wenge wedge neck, birdseye diamondwood board, Nord DC's with an Audere. Recorded through a Little Mark II DI into Protools.

not my finest hour on the fretless, but I offer it up for the great tone of that bass.

At the time I thought it was too aggressive and I swapped it out for an F bass AC5, going for a more acoustic/organic sound. But lordy, the Roscoe played itself, was so easy to play with good pitch due to its clarity, and sat in a mix really well. It was a champ.

Well, the decision has been made <sigh>

For Sale/Trade - Roscoe Century Custom 5 JM

The fairly new to me Century Custom 5 JM is up for sale/trade. I just like the neck/string spacing of my regular spec Century Custom JJ so much better. It's a shame, the JM is a fantastic bass in both sound and looks.

Open to trades on it and I'd really just rather have another Roscoe. So if you're hankering for a five-string 19mm Roscoe that's not a classic series, holler at me.

Wow! Someone's going to be very happy with this. And the price is a steal! If my Roscoe bag wasn't so full, I'd jump on this!

If it weren’t 19mm I’d jump too. I loved the J/MM combo on a Lakland I had years ago.

Yeah, the J/MM setup is fantastic sounding and I really like that the Roscoe version has the MM in the MM sweet spot (though the Lakland 55-02/14/94 sound great with their pickup placement, too). And, this was my first experience immediately liking Bart pickups. I’ve got my eye out for another standard spec’d J/MM Roscoe. There’s a few floating around, but not visually what I’m wanting. I wish the green one on Reverb was priced more realistically and, errr, wasn't green.

For me, it's not so much the string spacing itself, I'm generally ok with 17.5-19mm at the bridge and switching between basses with different spacings. It's more that on this particular bass, the 19mm alters the nut width and neck dimensions from the tried-and-true Roscoe formula. In fact, on my Century 5JJ, I have the bridge adjusted all the way out to its widest settings, but I'm much more fond of the neck dimensions and nut width on that bass.

I agree...even as a left-hander playing rightie, I dislike 'strange-to-me' nut widths and corresponding string spacing at the nut much more than different bridge spacings.

I'm not a lefty playing righty but the extra neck width at the nut (and body for that matter) makes the bass play different (IMO). I didn't try anything on this particular bass (other than adjust the bridge saddles to be ~18-18.3mm) but on my 19mm JB STD I installed a new HipShot Type A 18mm bridge and though it helped it still felt different (than my other Roscoe's). Maybe I should have replaced the nut too but I eventually decided that someone else would like it "as is" so I traded it.

Of course come to think of it, I did that a lot for a while!:D

Right! I had a 19mm b/s XYZ bass with a 2’’ nut! Beautiful and great sounding bass, and I could play it, but it was somewhat uncomfortable playing in those low keys in the first position. It was like a hand developing device for my Roscoe necks!
