Roscoe Club

 Joe, you know you are loved and respected in this thread!!

I'm looking to change things up a bit in one of my Roscoe basses and might take the Nordstrand route. I just might like it better than the Dementer preamp.

I think that you might Ray. The Demeter is a great sounding plug and play preamp but it doesn’t aggressively change the tone. It sounds great with the EQ set all up or all down. But there’s not a ton of variation between any settings.
The Nord (in my Fender mind you) can dial in all kinds of great sounds. Still it has really smooth lows and glassy highs. The mids can be as subtle or as aggressive as you need them to be.
The Demeter mids are really smooth and musical but it can’t get aggressive mids.
Add the passive tone (which works in the active or passive mode) is a game breaker. And of course the active/passive self is an awesome feature and sounds really good!

I’m no preamp expert like Joe. But since I received my Roscoe Classic with a Darkglass preamp, it’s my favorite preamp. Why? It has separate mid controls, not a single push/pull mid control. With a separate high mid and low mid control, it simulates the controls on your amplifier. The difference is that there is no treble knob. You don't need it.

This is a new preamp design idea that originates from Sheldon Dingwall. So even the idea of this configuration will take some time to become accepted. Nevertheless, it sounds great!

Joe, my friend, you need to try this new Darkglass preamp. I think you’ll love it.

This is what I need on my Fretless. I use the mid a lot, the bass a little, and the treble? Yeah, I don't even touch it.

I pretty much run my EQ flat with a little cut on treble. I do like the idea of more control on the mids though. Although I do have that ability with my FOH EQ.
As you all know, most amps and preamp pedals have separate mid controls. I can get some awesome mid tones with this Darkglass onboard preamp.

Hey Gary. I had a Darkglass in a Zon. Really great for fretless but I’d be afraid that might it be a bit too bland for a fretted bass. Plus it can’t do the active/passive thing and has no passive tone control.

Pretty much any preamp for passive pickups can be wired with an active/passive switch and a passive tone control.

The EQ on my bass stays flat. I'll do required tweaks on my amp during set-up, and from there on out EQ adjustments on the bass are minor.

I have had the itch to try a Demeter pre in my fretted five, but they are a little hard to come by these days. Not really up for "rolling the dice" on a new one.

That’s basically me. I have a certain way I set up my amp and normally prefer my basses set flat using my amp settings (essentially bass boosted slightly at 40Hz, 500 Hz dipped out a bit, but 800 Hz boosted pretty good, and then treble slightly turned down). What I do use abundantly on a bass is a tone control and pickup pan/blend. With those two things and right hand positioning, I seem to be able to get everywhere I need to tone-wise.

You'll love the VTC. If you don't mind, ask Keith what value cap he's using. I normally use .047uF but after reading up on it, it sounded like .1uF might be better suited for the VTC (the HIGHER the value of the CAP, the more BASS your tone will have when you have turned down the treble of your tone). I'd be curious to know what value he uses. I also used a Orange Drop type.
Next time I converse with Keith I'll ask. I am sorta curious too.

Exactly

Which one is that?
Is there a new Tone Capsule?
Or are you talking about the Harmonic Booster ?
Something else?
I'm not announcening anything new here

Sounds unlike any pre I've played. Love it and recommend.:)

You recommend it but you won't tell me what it is?
Confused...

I probably shouldn't speak for Gary but I think that since he purchased the bass used he's not sure exactly what's in it (other than he was told it's a Darkglass pre with bass/low-mid/hi-mid).
I'm pretty sure that it's the Tone capsule. This one:

That's it. Thanks Joe.:)

I've never really been a distortion guy, but their amps have some great distortion sounds. I guess it's targeted more to the millennial generation? Sounds really good, if you're into that.
