Roscoe Club

The ProTec Contego is probably the best bang for the buck bag out there imo , it's up there with the incase , approaching it's quality and features . It offers more protection than the sleeve which I also really like and it's a good bit cheaper than bags that are not as good .

I would agree with that also. The Protec Contego is an amazing case for storage and protection. My only problem is they are hard to find for sale new.

I'm so anal about my gear that I had to step back and think about it some more. I have the Noble concentric 250K pot (with the std. black dome knobs) but it doesn't have the P/P switch for the A/P function.
Am I being to anal about my concentric knobs not matching?:wacky:

If you want it to match, don't feel bad about that! I've bought basses with knobs that had non-matching (to me) abalone tops, and eventually found better matches. I thought I might not mind it, and I ended up 'minding it'. Do your thing!

I like my old ProTec Contego case. Good storage, fairly light, nice straps and stuff. I can get 2 for the price of one Mono bag, and I don't really need a super great bag. I carry them from my house to the car to the gig and back. The fact that the Roscoe bags have Roscoe on them isn't too big an issue where I live for theft. No one really knows what a Roscoe is around here.

@Joe BassPlayer

It sounds like perfection. The tone control works in active and passive and I’m very familiar with it having them on Devon basses. This one is more focused than any Roscoe I’ve played which I really like and the use of the tone control I can take it from modern to vintage in a hurry. I probably like the tone control with the Bart setup even better than I’ve had in Nordstrand electronics. It seems to be more even when switching between active and passive than the Nordie setup did. Overall I’m blown away.

What’s the electronics in that one?

It has the famous Roscoe Quad Bart System with his Bart preamp but he added a Sadowsky style tone control and active passive option. The tone knob allows you to easily dial in a brighter more modern feature full on or dialed back it gives you a vintage tone. That with the Katalox (Ebony like) fretboard makes this the snappiest and most open Roscoe I’ve had. To me it’s perfection and exactly what I want in a bass.

Is the preamp based on a normal NTMB or is it also customized for Keith?

Good deal!

For what it's worth, I setup my tech bench yesterday evening and prepared to do the mod to my Roscoe (Passive Tone and A/P SW) but chickened out. :chicken::chicken::chicken:
The Noll pot requires similar but different knobs than the Noble (slightly less height and a hole in the top for the top knob). "I'm a man, yes I am and I can't help but loving it so!"

Well I got home this afternoon and felt super courageous!!!

I pulled my Roscoe out of the OHSC (that nobody uses anymore except JohnnyR) and went to unscrewing access covers and cutting wires!
It is finished! And it sounds really, really good!:bassist::bassist::bassist:

I can't tell any difference in the operation of the master volume prior to the preamp. You just use a 250K in lieu of the STD 25k. I used a .1mF Orange Drop cap and it worked really well. I normally would have used the .047 but I though for using it in a VTC it might sound better.
The different size concentric knobs actually look OK on the bass. The bottom knob is not very tall and the top knob is really close to the size of the standard dome knobs used for the blend and mid controls.

The passive tone control really smooths out the sound as subtly or aggressively as you want. Definitely a nice feature to add. The passive sound of the bass is also really good and actually quite a bit hotter than I thought it might be.

Here's some pics. The jury is still out on the different knob but it might just be OK. What do you guys think?

That sounds like my thoughts on this setup with my new Roscoe. The passive tone with use of the tone control makes it’s a really nice feature and the output is a lot closer than the Norsatrands I’ve used in the past. The birdies was almost unusable as the passive output was about half of the active output. I’m loving that setup.

I think that knob looks fine, and that bass is just sexy as all get out! I really dig the passive tone control on my active Sire - it would be cool if my SKB had one.

Thanks Oren.
The Passive Tone control would be an easier add-on (mainly because the Noll concentric with the DPDT SW has so many small pins fairly close together). The only tense task required is opening up the Vol/VTC pot hole. The STD Bart vol pot (Alpha 25K) has a slightly smaller theaded shaft and you have to either drill the hole in the body out or use a tapered round file to open up the hole slightly. I used a tapered round file (much less risk of splintering at the hole) and it worked great (1-2 minutes).
But, that being said, IMO the A/P switch is a great feature to add that could certainly come in handy at a gig where a battery or preamp dies. Plus, these Roscoe Barts really sound great passive.

If anyone wants a Noble 250K concentric to add the Passive Tone control let me know. $20.00 to your mailbox.

I can be a little CDO myself (that's OCD but I couldn't resist alphabetizing). The different concentric knobs look fine. They match. The two concentric so are for different purposes. Each being a different height is a feature, not a problem.;)

Played a bit more with the modified Roscoe and I’m really impressed with the added versatility. The passive tone control really takes the edge off the sound of the Bart pre and transfers it to a really nice vintage tone (verses the modern of the typical Bart pre). I used the Bart trim pot to balance the output of the active & passive modes of the bass (did that with the EQ set flat).
I’m thinking now “why did I wait so long?”.
I may eventually still install a Nordstrand preamp in the bass though. The highs, mids and lows sound so nice with that pre in my Fender that I can’t help but imagine how it would sound with the Roscoe Bart’s!
Not now though. Just maybe eventually.:)
