Roscoe Club

I recall hearing Jimmy Haslip in an interview saying how he had to persuade Keith to get his bass wired volume/volume instead of volume/blend. He also said he prefers it because of more varied tones. He should have just gone to you ;)

You know, another thing that he shared at the last Roscoe GTG in Greensboro was that he always “dimes” (run full up) all of the EQ knobs on his basses. I can see that on passive basses but not active. I’ve always wondered if he carried that one over from his passive bass days.

Well I had some down time this morning and since I found another source for the concentric knobs and Electro-socket I did the Bart to Nord preamp transplant. Super easy install and the preamp sounds excellent. In order to get the active/passive and passive tone controls I had to go with the volume/volume in lieu of the volume/blend. But since I’ve had it in my Fender Elite for several months I’ve actually grown to prefer it. I’m of the opinion that you can get more varied sounds out of the vol/vol configuration. It just seems to change the tones more gradually (IMO of course).

Here’s a few pics. I put some black tape over the former trim pot hole in the rear cover (but I’m thinking of getting some wooden covers made so I can have them omit that hole).

Well I’ve had some more time to play the Roscoe with the newly installed Nord preamp. I’m pleasantly surprised that the bass still retains that baked in Roscoe tone which leads me to believe that it’s more a product of the Roscoe Bart’s and the neck construction. I also suspect though that the Nord preamp must be similar to the Bart in some ways because the Demeter, Aguilar and Audere changed the overall sound a bit more IMO.
I do really like the sound of the passive tone control in the active mode. It seems to roll over a bit more gradual than the one that I installed in Bart preamp. That may be because of where it is in the circuit as compare to the way I had to wire my Bart (I believe that the Nord is prior to the op-amp/EQ and the Bart is after).
The Nord preamp is also a bit hotter too. I had to adjust the trim pot almost at the minimum in order to run the EQ’s fairly High (I ran the Bart trim pot approx. halfway).
I’ll record something with the Roscoe/Nord combo when time permits (busy weekend).
Have a fun safe Memorial Day weekend!

Interesting. The only active bass I’ve ever thought sounded good dimed is a StingRay with the 2-band pre.
Good call!

Check out www.lovemyswitches.com if you’re looking for a great price on Sadowsky-style knobs. Material used is a smidge different (Sadowsky uses Kilo knobs), but they’re still great quality knobs that are visually almost identical and not as expensive.

I had to share this new classic song from Bob Dylan with my brothers. Not bass related. But bass players are smarter than most. So I knew you would understand. It has a message for all of us.

Never heard that song Gary. Where in the world did you dig that up from?
It might have been a hit tune if Dylan had put a bass solo in it!

Dylan always made me feel better about my singing voice!:D

Of course he’s a “Word Man”. A modern day American poet.

So that’s a new video/song?

I saw Kennedy’s face and assumed it was from the 60’s and I had somehow missed it.

I heard this on Sirius XM satellite radio last week. I listen to Sirius XM while I'm WFH (working from home). The DJ said Bob has been sitting on this song for a while and finally decided to release it. It immediately struck me to my soul, talking about the JFK assassination with such bold and shocking words. I think it will go down as one of his greatest. It's 17 minutes long, so you won't hear it on your AM/FM transistor radio.

I’ve finally found my setup with Roscoe Basses and Noble Preamp. This Tube preamp makes these basses sound even better with a smooth and thick as butter finger style tone with great clarity. I couldn’t quit playing it this weekend.

Cool Shane!
I've heard that they sound really good.
So did the Buckeye Roscoe arrive back home (or is that an old pic)?
