Roscoe Club

Cool pic Ray!

The history behind this pic is that the band was taken to this park way out into the country side of Thailand. Either the Air Force or Thai Army provided transportation, the flatbed trailer and a APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) for the gig. I left Thailand and was stationed stateside at Eglin AFB, where an Airman came up to me and said he knew me from somewhere. We talked and discovered he was an Air Force photographer stationed in Thailand and was at that event to take pictures! He gave me several pictures from the event, and a few were of the band! We didn't know any one was taking pictures! How cool was that?

I had pretty much stopped playing guitar, but since COVID-19 has me quarantined, I've pickup the guitar more and enjoying playing it and the bass less. If things don't get back to normal soon, I'll be twice a guitar player and once a bass player.

Is there a song for that?

You know I forgot one detail to my Roscoe voyage. It was actually Dennis (BassWR) that was at Atlanta Discount and called me to let me know that they had 2 really nice used Roscoe’s in on consignment. He knew that I had been talking them up and wanted one so he called me when he saw them.
I almost totally forgot Dennis’ involvement in me getting my 1st Roscoe.

@bassWR Thanks Dennis!:)
I remember those 2 Roscoes well.
My bass path started in Jr High with a Fender Pbass. I primarily played bass at church and with gospel groups alternately I played brass instruments in high school.
I started attending college at Albany Jr. College where they had a tremendous music program thinking I would be playing bass in the recruiting band and several other good gigs. That’s where I met Jackie Street and realized I wouldn’t be playing much bass. Jackie went on to be one of the most prolific Nashville session players in Christian music.

Parted ways with the Pbass and didn’t play for a couple of years.
Eventually got back into Christian music with a borrowed Gibson Ripper and migrated to a G&L L2000 (Thanks Joe), Alembic Series 1 Fretless, Jazz5 built by Joe and then my First Roscoe LG where I discovered the classifieds on Talkbass.
Tried a bunch of stuff over the years but I’m pretty much settled on Roscoes and Valentis these days.
Back to Jackie Street.... at 19 he was the kindest and most thoughtful person I ever met. And he sure made my Pbass sing. There are a few threads about in on TB

@Freddy-G.
Gary, is it just me or is your new Roscoe a miniature version?
It looks like a mini bass or guitar!:jawdrop:

Has anyone ever had a Roscoe Preamp build up a charge when changing from active to passive and do a loud pop? One of my Roscoes does a loud pop at times when doing the push pull active-passive and pops pretty loud each time you switch it .
I’ve never experienced that with any of my A/P basses.

Ive experimented with it and it does it anytime the bass is played in passive mode for a couple minutes. It pops every time like it’s built up some kind of charge. I’ve never had a bass do that. Plays perfectly and preamp works perfectly but it sounds like the cable is being unplugged from bass without it being muted.

I have played several Ken Smith basses that "popped" going from passive to active, and vice versa, while using a push/pull A/P pot. The active signal was higher than passive, and according to Ken Smith, was the cause of the issue. Fortunately for me, I always played in active mode. Passive mode was just a fail safe for dead batteries.

A workaround for the issue is to mute your bass signal when switching from active to passive, and vice versa. You could employ the mute function of your tuner, the mute function on your amp, or a simple passive dedicated mute switch between your bass signal and next input.

I haven't had that issue on a Roscoe but I did on another bass.
It doesn't happen on my Nordstand pre (in my Roscoe).

I've heard that installing a bleed capacitor will solve the issue. Here's a thread that discusses it some:

popping noise switching from active to passive

With all the noise, strife, and trouble in the world, a quiet weekend can be a welcome thing.

Meanwhile, there was some good noise on the Real Roscoe Guitars FB page, where our buddy Keith Roscoe was foregoing some quiet, working well into Saturday night on his next batch of special basses.

He also shared some interesting info on a prototype that is expected to make its way to production. Good news

A quiet weekend on the Roscoe thread .....:whistle:
Hopefully our basses switch from active to passive so quietly :D

I forgot to post this last week- I talked to Keith last Wednesday about my bass and its new neck (it’s still there, not finished yet) and he’d mentioned he was hoping to have more people back in the shop working this week as they’ve been so busy making basses. So that’s good news too. :bassist:

See in the picture, Keith can control the size by turning the tuning key. ;) The LG was my first Roscoe and still my fave.

I have to add, the all wenge fretboard and wenge wedge neck make for a very tight and focused tone that really lets the Roscoe/Bart sound sing. I love it!
