Roscoe Club

I had a "transition Roscoe" that had an ash body, maple top, pau ferro fret board with Nordstrand dual coil pick ups and the Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp. It was a great sounding bass. My guitarist said it has more balls than a Christmas tree. I had planned on keeping it for six to ten months but ended up keeping it for about three years.

Me and my Roscoe with an Aguilar pre and DR Neon strings tore it up tonight. Sat in for three songs. Other bass player took two solos before I got on... The usual, everyone goes to the bar or outside for a smoke/stops paying attention. I hop on and people gravitated to the bass's side of the stage for the first time all night. I'm on quite a high right now. Sweet night, so many compliments on my bass and its tone.

Nice action shot! Good looking Roscoe. Glad to hear that you're digging the Aggie pre.

They do have an aggressive sounding tone in a Roscoe, especially when paired with an ash body.

Joe, you da man - I love my Bubinga / Ash SKB 3005, A.K.A. "The Hoppah" and have the Bart / Bart combo which sounds awesome. I am tempted sometimes to try the Aggie OB3 preamp but wonder if it will sound too aggressive. What say you? And others? I had a LG 3006 (Anthony Crawford's) Maple top on Spanish Cedar with the Aggie / Bart combo and it was great but I don't have it anymore. My newer Roscoe 6 string has the Bart/ Bart combo and I love that, but that bass doesn't gig out nearly as much as my fretted 5 string. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Hey Pete!
I wouldn't change a thing with the bubinga/ash Roscoe. I've heard clips of that one and it's the bee's knees for sure!
IMO the Aggie works better with Spanish cedar because Spanish cedar can almost be too polite sounding. The Aggie really gives it some needed edge.
IMO ash is already quite aggressive, especially on a Roscoe, and the Aggie really takes it over the edge for my tastes. I will say though that you will be heard in a loud mix!

Now the Demeter preamp in an ash Roscoe, that's smooth! :)
Glassy highs and smooth lows and mids. The Demeter really worked great with my mahogany 3006 signature with the wenge wedge neck. It tamed the sound just enough while still allowing it to keep plenty of growl. It combined perfectly with the Roscoe Barts too. Opening up the tone just a bit while still keeping a bit of the natural compression of the Roscoe Barts.

IMO, a Demeter preamp in your 3006 would give you a totally different (and wonderful) flavor of Roscoe to gig with.

Reactions: so tuff
Mine has an ash body, but I do mostly play rock and roll. It kicked a$$ last night. By boosting the low mids instead of the high mids, I've found it can be tamed a little. I don't know, the Bart/Bart combo was too tame for me.

Hey man, I see you are in VT; I'm on Cape Cod. If you ever have gigs in S.E. Mass, hit me up.

Joe - Thanks, I knew you would be the voice of reason for me :p.

I play a lot of funky - rock - jazzy stuff and the sounds I get from my Roscoes and my fingers are fine...... Peace

( My Roscoe is still being made but I'm in!)

I didn't know this thread was open otherwise I'd have been in a while ago. Joe - you started that other one. What happened to it?

Anyway- glad to see some roscoe talk going on.

Keith,
The other thread was started in the Roscoe forum primarily to let folks know that this one was being started in the Basses forum (since the Roscoe forum was being closed).

Sorry for the confusion!:)

Any progress on the news Roscoe build?

Cool. That makes sense.

No word on the roscoe yet. Honestly, I haven't been asking. I should probably get in touch with Gard just to see where things are at.

Also Joe - I'm heading to Atlanta this saturday for a gig. Maybe we could meet up and you could borrow the DI for a while. Thoughts?

That would be awesome Keith! PM on the way

Keith (good name, by the way...;) ), things are actually beginning to progress for your (crazy custom! ;) ) bass, should have the last bit of stuff (the fingerboard slotted for your scale length) in a week or so, once that's here, the neck will start going forward, and everything starts to happen quickly. :)

Right now, much happening here, including my own new baby will be "born" next week!

:hyper:

Also, Joel, another step along the road to the "top secret project" has been taken this week.

:ninja:
