Roscoe Club

I deleted my previous string gauge post since you got to it first, Jome.

Ken,

Congrats on the bass! I saw that one in the classifieds, it's a looker. I've put DR Hi-Beams on mine and like those as well with my particular bass (Roscoe Barts/Aguilar Pre).

As for the string spacing, the bridge is adjustable so you can space it out just a hair more but certainly not to the point of being a full 19mm. Like you, 19mm spacing is where I feel at home but, with my bridge adjusted out, I find the spacing comfortable.

Kind of strange that a luthier would ship a bass with a set of strings that can't easily be purchased. I have a bunch of Hi Beam sets here, since that is what I use on my J. Might start out with those, since I use the .125 B.

I always like to try the exact set that the bass ships with, but it looks like you can't buy that exact set (the 170's have a 130 B, which I'm not sure would mess with the nut.

No big deal, if a bit of a strange choice by the company!

Congrats Ken. That's a beauty!

The Roscoe strings are bulk purchased D'Addario XL Nickelwound strings and are slightly different from the std. EXL170-5SL set (the "SL" is SUPER LONG, the non-SL sets tend to be a bit short for a 35" scale length on the B & E strings).

The gauges for the Roscoe sets are:

45, 60, 85, .100, .125

Let us know how you like the Roscoe once you gig with it a while.

Any issue just installing the EXL170-5SL's?

Sorry for all the minutia questions!

Though I've never done it, you can order the Roscoe strings straight from the shop should you want to.

Don't really want to start that. Just want to find an easily obtainable set of strings that work. No muss, no fuss!

Thanks for the info! I'm excited to get the bass. I'll either put a set of Hi Beams on it when it arrives, or the 'close enough' set of EXL170-5SL if I get the 'OK' from users on the .130 B. Not sure how exact the nut is cut for the 'custom' .125 gauge.

Wow! Ken gets a Roscoe! Man, you're trying all kinds of things as of late, huh? Good for you! I haven't had a Roscoe in years, but they really are great, great basses. Nothing quite like them. In the end they wouldn't make one for me with my specs (26 frets) so I moved on, but they are fantastic.

Good to see you on the site! Hope you are well. Yeah, I've been playing the P now pretty much for a couple of years and loving it (using the new Bergantino CN212 and the Aguilar TH500). The P doesn't really make a lot of sense with the Glockenklang though, and it seems like the Roscoe voicing is just make for that head. So, a used one is a nice way to try that theory out:D Fun to have some variation every couple/few years.

I sold my trans orange Sadowsky about a year ago. I don't miss the Sadowsky (great bass, but just not the sound in my head at this point), but I did miss the trans orange and maple look:D. When I saw that particular Roscoe, it was too hard to pass up!

That's what I meant...you with a P bass was shock enough! Haha!

Hope you're well Ken. I'm finishing up some charts and will record as soon as money permits. My first record. Will send it to you when it gets done. Very excited! Tunes are coming along very nicely.

Wonderful! I look forward to hearing it.

Yeah, that passive P was a surprise to me also. The only thing that made it make sense was that it was still an overpriced Fender copy with an extra string, which has been pretty consistent over the last decade with me:D:hiding:

I was never a fan of the D'Addario B strings. They always sounded a bit hollow to me for some reason. The DR Hi-Beams always sound consistently good. I should buy a Roscoe to see how that set sounds on one ;) In all seriousness I am weighing buying one myself.

I imagine Roscoe doesn't use the .130 B because of the Hipshot B bridge. It works better with a tapered string or a .125 or less.

Also, D'Addario has extended the winding length on their standard length sets and they fit my 35 inch scale great!

Jason can hook you up with any set of strings you need as well.

Makes sense. Thanks to all for all the detailed info. I'll start out with a set of 45-125 Hi Beams (which have always worked great for me) and take it from there!

I look forward to getting the bass. Gard and I go WAY back to LA Bass Exchange (edit: Bass Central) days. Nice to finally buy one of these.

I love Gard and would really like to own a Roscoe as well. The body styles are all kinda small to me though. The century being the biggest is probably what I'd go with but I do wish there was something a little fuller as I am a fuller guy. Haha!

Lets check with Gard. I'm sure it's .45, .65, .85, .105, .125 like the standard DR gauges, but they use d'adds

Gard is a good dude for sure, as is Keith, Tony and all the crew. It's nice to call the shop and have a real human answer the phone every time. I am sure they would rather us buy strings from the traditional vendors, not the shop. I have D'ads on 2 of my 3 Roscoe basses now, but have also tried DR Sunbeams and Low Riders and they worked fine.

Also, if any of you southern boys are in the Greensboro area, connect with Gard and try to see the shop. It's a trip to see where our babies are born and the Roscoe peeps are super accommodating.
