I like the 3+2 and the 2+2 much more than the 4 in a line or the 4+1.
But I'm also a giant nerd.

Actually, she said it was "sick" when I showed it to her as we've talked about shell pink basses before as a breast cancer awareness thing and because they just look cool. But I only think they look cool as a jazz body.

I'm rather partial to Ken Smith's 2+3 headstock, which I think is very cool in an XYZ sort of way. Ken contended that the longer distance of the string post to the bridge saddle in this configuration benefited the feel and tone of the "B" string.

When you make the string longer, isn't gravity affecting the "flop" of the string? Why is a shorter stick stiffer than a longer stick, but with strings you guys think it's the opposite? Why has every shorter string (scale) length double bass (upright) felt tighter to me than longer ones in my 40 years of playing? Why do Violin-Bass Luthiers adjust the tension of the strings by moving the tail piece towards the bridge (looser) or away (tighter) from it. Answer these simple questions and then ask, "Why are some Basses are better than others?" The Electric Bass commercially is about 50 years old. The Violin Family instruments are about 500 years old. Physics are as old as time. No, actually older. When you apply a formula, be sure all the ingredients are included or the soup won't taste right !!
Just passing on some major Ken Smith marketing mojo, Joe. However, the Smith bass that I played with that configuration was one of the most smokin' XYZs I've ever experienced.
If you want the nuts and bolts technical analysis (gobbledegook) from the master himself, here it is. Good luck reading his clarification of "2+3 vs 3+2" without at least smiling : )
i think the concept is the b string tuner is farther from the nut on the 2+3, so it has a longer overall length from the bridge to the tuner (although I've also read that anything beyond the nut doesn't matter, and the same with anything before the bridge saddle (thru body vs top load), so ymmv). My FYZAm I missing something Fritz?
How would the 2/3 tuner configuration benefit the feel and tone of the "B" string (since it's still the first key on the head stock closest to the nut)?
Beautiful bass though!

My FYZbass has this headstock, and while the B is excellent, the whole bass is world class so I don’t know if it’s just the one feature that does it

Fodera has their "extended b" headstock, which would confuse the heck out of me for tuning, and I've also heard has questionable benefits.

View attachment 4058159 That Fodera head stock looks like one of my grand sons strung it. Really strange!

Fodera extended B string option that’s why it’s strung that wayIm sorry but that Just looks terrible for a bass brand that cost as much as they do.
I realize that and understand their thinking of how it probably improves the B string but to me it just looks like a mistake lol. I guess when it comes to the grand scale of things most wouldn't even notice.Fodera extended B string option that’s why it’s strung that way

I don’t know- my instruments aren’t really used to being played by anyone with talentI'm the last one to care about or have specific feelings about headstock shape, tuner config, etc., so when I say something is noticeably ugly and wrong...ew, Fodera. I'm sure it sounds great, but ew.
@Fred312b, as soon as restrictions are up, I'm swinging by to try your F bass, because I've always wanted to try one. I'll bring lots of Roscoes for you to try!
