At square one, one could argue successfully for Nordstrand, Bartolini, Demeter, Aguilar, Pope, Sadowsky, East or any other pre-amp and pups combinations. I think when you factor in your bass and your ears, and the vibe you get when you play and hear that voice exactly, or close enough to what you want to hear, from the whole bass package (or in those cases where the BL or sound guy speaks otherwise), then that's all that matters.
It's mostly unfortunate that you have to venture down that rabbit hole to get to your bass nirvana...., but then something changes and you are back at square one again.
