After talking to Joe a few weeks ago about the tone on my Century 5, he recommended swapping the Bart pre for this one. Of course, he also sold that bass

I think first I’ll try having the Barts wired in with both sets of wires connected, but then I have to decide if I want to go the Joe and Ray route of Bart pickups and Nordy pre, or the Shane route and go all Nordstrand. And then sell the bass .

Won’t be until at least next week though, so don’t hold your breath.

Matt, Just for the record, I didn’t sell the Roscoe (with the Nord pre) because I didn’t like it. It just had too many strings and was more modern sounding than my Roscoe PJ.
I still stand on my statement that you will love the sound of your Roscoe with that Nord installed.

Yup.

I think it's fair to say I'm past the honeymoon period and I can still confidently say that that Roscoe is easily one of the best sounding and best playing instruments I've ever touched.

I'm a fan of all things Nordstrand, though, and pretty much all things Bartolini. This is the first bass I've had that was a combination of the two and it's definitely a win!

I know nothing about the Aguilar DC pickups but the Aguilar OBP-3 preamp with the Aguilar PJ pickups make a really nice combination too. Oddly I've never been a fan of the Aguilar OBP-3 preamp with Bartolini or Nordstrand pickups but it sounds really nice with Aguilar pickups. I guess that makes sense being as they're designed by the same company.
When I purchased the Roscoe Custom PJ 5 I figured the first thing that I'd do is replace the OBP-3 preamp with a Nordstrand preamp but I've actually been really pleased with the sound. It also has basically the same functions (3-band, mid frequency PP switch, active/passive switch with passive tone control).

That should look killer with the BEM board! So cool that it’s going to be loaded with Roscoe Bart quad coils. I haven’t seen a Classic with those. And of course the Nord preamp with those pickups sounds wonderful!

Yeah I’ve looked for years for a Koa top with a lot of sapwood in the middle. Actually had Keith look and try to source one and even had Devon try to find one.

So who has a 4 string Classic Roscoe P? Tell me about the neck..nut width, general shape, etc. I got a quote from Keith on a build and I will probably decide which way I want to go this weekend. I think if I do it I will ask him about oiling the neck, as the back of the neck on my Classic J gets very sticky very quickly.

I thought the Aguilar DCB’s sounded a lot like the EMG DC’s, with maybe a little more low end push, which isn’t surprising since they have similar construction. I had them in a Modulus Q5 with the obp-3, and I liked the pickups a lot, but was not a fan of the preamp. I thought these videos are an accurate representation.

Problem is, none of them sound like a passive P/J (not even my Century P/J) which is the sound that is working for the band I'm in now. I'm going to have to give up some comfort for the sound, although the.......Fender.....PJ I use now fits like a glove as well.

My Classic P is awesome. The nit is wide, which ji thought I wouldn’t like, but I do. I have a Honey Badger pickup. HipShot Ultralight tuners. I think Greg had those requests from his shop. I think it’s one of the first Classic basses made. It’s light weight, but sounds huge. Honestly, the band usually likes it better than my Century 5.
