Rounds and Flats on octave basses

Originally was thinking of changing the octave strings on my Hagstrom H8, but then found some ppl suggested to use flats on the D/G strings and rounds on the E/A strings.
The E/A nickle strings paired with the round octaves sound good so may go with the flats on both pairs of the D/G strings.
For a bit had Roto 66 steel rounds and D'addario nickle wound octaves and sounded great blended together.
Any one have any experience with using different types of strings on octave basses? Steel & nickle rounds? nickle & halfwounds? flats and tapewounds?

It can be done sure why not?

I mean, there are some upright sets that are steel wound on the E & A strings and Nylon Tapewound or Gut on the D & A.

The great thing about bass is you can play further up the neck if you want a thinker or similar tone as the lower notes on the E & A strings, and on the D / G etc... Could be a pretty versatile instrument that way too...
