I wish I had gotten this advice. Keep notes on your impressions of each string, if you can record a short sample of each great
When you remove the strings label and store them carefully. You will be soooo glad you did.
IME, Chromes sound OK, but are too stiff. La Bella Low Tension Flats have a similar smooth surface feel, but are much more supple and pliant. I wager we can look forward to a D'Addario analog soon enough.
Love LTFs. I went from dead rounds. To tapewounds (loved them too). Tried chromes but too stiff for me. Tried LTFs and now both my basses have them. I need to go on more strong adventures but so happy with i havent.

Thank you for weighing in- My next major purchase (I hope) is going to be a Mesa Amp and Cabinet so I will keep what you said above in mind.
I'm currently only playing thru a 100W practice amp so I may notice only a marginal difference at the moment, but your comment about running it thru a Mesa stack is encouraging since I'm hoping one of those is in the not too distant future for me...
Cant really go wrong with Mesa. I don't have the need for a full stack anymore as I mostly just do studio work. I have switched over to Aguilar in the last month. But if I were building a rig for an all out heavy sound It would be Mesa every time.
My advise is to look up the bass players that you like the way they sound. See what they are using. Its a place to start.
Good Luck and enjoy the process.
