Correct, Burke usually was "live" with Preston..but Watson primarily and Chuck Rainey always recorded with Preston with Bobby Watson being on most of his hits. George Harrison's bassist, Klaus Voorman also recorded with Preston, but never on any of his hits.

Additionally, as a point of information, Bobby Watson DID accompany Preston, not on above link/clip, but on the very FIRST SNL recorded Special Billy did!

Watson is extremely talent and very humble...wish Rufus was still together with cutie Ms, Chaka!

I love his work on Michael jackson's "Rock With You". I read somewhere that Quincy had Bobby record the track first but wasn't sure if he wanted to use it. So he had Louis johnson (who was on every other track) record it also. Well, he compared the two and decided that Bobby had actually nailed it! Bobby's bassline made the record. Wise choice Q!

Bobby Watson is like the guy from the Gap Band in terms of being an underrated, but great player. Like Wilson from the Gap Band, Watson was one of the first people I noticed detuning
like he did on Michael Jackson's Rock Wit You or as he did throughout Angela and Rene's Street Called Desire album.

Chaka lost a great deal of weight in the past year or so... it's definately back to cute and "near" little! :bassist:

I love Watson's playing on Off the Wall, but his playing with Rene and Angela totally blows me away. I know A Street Called Desire was one of the first times I really noticed a bassist other than Anthony Jackson playing below E. looking back, I Robert Wilson from the Gap Band was doing it too.

True remember Yearnin' for yor Love' by the GAP band? that bass line was deeper than the deep blue sea! ;)

I know this is not live, but it is cool to see an old clip of Bobby Watson with Rufus. He was actually a P-bass guy most of the time. I know he was playing one when I saw him live back in 1977.

Chaka Khan was pretty hot back in the day too!

Doc what makes this song so great is that the groove was just so damn tight and that's basically who Rufus was just an awesome tight ass band even til this day ! and not to take away from the thread but I have to say Tony Maiden was an outstanding guitarist both rythm/lead and no doubt his vocals was hella-tight !

Check him and Louis Johnson out on Rene and Angela's Wall to Wall lp
especially the track Imaginary Playmates ( it's basically Rufus on this track) Bobby's pocket on this tune is just insane !
